Title: Acceptance in to the Nuke program questions.
Post by: palaonds on Dec 23, 2010, 08:00
Hello, after i took the ASVAB, and scored a AFQT score of 90, my recruiter told me i should go in to the Nuke program. My recruiter is on leave for the holidays and will not be back till the second week in January.
I am wondering if i will get accepted.
   I scored a 90 on the ASVAB
I am waiting to take my NAPT (i only need to score a 41 to make the requirements)
My high school GPA was 2.9 with no D's or F's (not the best)
My College GPA is 1.9 with 60 credits at a recognized honors university (very poor, reason why i am making a change)
Only an expunged alcohol citation & a speeding ticket on my recored
as of now $175 dept to a bank for the last 2 years. I will pay it after the holidays, but before i take the NAPT

I am not sure how much weight is placed on GPA during the selecting process into the nuke program. I really want to get accepted in to the Nuke program, and since i have to wait for my recruiter to get back from leave; i am stressing over whether or not i will get accepted.

What do you think my chances are on getting accepted?

I suggest you look at the Nuclear Field Academic Eligibility Checklist
http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/CHECKLISTS/NUCLEAR%20FIELD%20PROGRAM%20ACADEMIC%20ELIGIBILITY%20CHECKLIST.pdf (http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/CHECKLISTS/NUCLEAR%20FIELD%20PROGRAM%20ACADEMIC%20ELIGIBILITY%20CHECKLIST.pdf)

Was your Junior Year high school GPA less than 2.0?
Was your Senior Year high school GPA less than 2.0?
Did you get a D, F, withdrawal, incomplete, or repeat any high school math class?
(Do not include statistics, business math, or computer math)

If you can answer 'no' to all of those questions, you shouldn't need an academic waiver.

You will need to disclose your alcohol and traffic violations, but they shouldn't be a problem.

You will need a waiver if you currently have any bad debt greater than 90 days.  You will also need a waiver if you have ever had any bad debt in excess of 180 days.

Your chances aren't bad at all i would imagine. You did mention an alcohol citation? That could be a potential waiver pending on the severity of the offense considering a requirement to the program is "Good Moral Standards" or some crap like that. When it comes to grades and such, unless you totally bomb the NAPT you sound like your setting pretty solid. Although (Unless they've changed the NAPT in the last 4 months, which is possible considering the test was recently compromised and they've made a few minor changes) the lowest score your allowed to get on the NAPT is a 50 not 41. It is possible that you may very well only be 41 points short, but in order to gain acceptance to the program (if the NAPT is required for the specific applicant) you must score a minimum of a 50 on the exam.

I got accepted 6ish months ago and am currently finishing up my senior year waiting to ship, I was a junior in HS, scored an 85 on ASVAB with a 64 on the NAPT (which is a rather difficult test BTW in my opinion, make sure you're pretty sturdy in your knowledge of trig, and basic sciences/physics. all the rest is pretty much just algebra worded in the most confusing way possible) and i had to get a waiver because i slept my whole freshman year in HS like an r-tard and with my few minor issues the process was still pretty painless and easy, it just took a few weeks to wait for a contract to open up was all.

As long as you pay off that small bill to the bank you look to be setting pretty decent in comparison to other nukes I've witnessed... Thats not to say you'll get in, I'm just saying I've seen much more screwed up individuals make it.

remember its not like your divisions "Nuke coordinator" (i don't remember the title, I've only talked to mine once in 8 months) has a bunch of applications he has to screen sitting in front of him on his desk to compare. You either meet the requirements, or you don't. The difficulty of waivers passing will change depending on how many Nuke positions need to be filled in your area at any given time tho. Once you meet the requirements you'll either sign asap (if there was no one waiting before you and a contract is open), or end up waiting till the beginning of the next month when the next wave of contracts open up.

But no matter how encouraging this may all sound. Always hope for the best, and expect the worst. Please inform us of the outcome though! and good luck!!!

Minimum score on the NAPT required is 50 I believe.

NAPT Minimum score is 50 i just scored 3pts short on my ASVAB so ASVAB scores + NAPT has to = 290 and mine is at 249 & 251 without the NAPT. so really i need to get a 50 on the NAPT.

VE+AR+MK+MC+NAPT=290
AR+MK+EI+GS+NAPT=290
VE+AR+MK+MC>252         ME:249
AR+MK+EI+GS>252          ME:251

*UPDATE* yesterday 01/05/2011 i successfully passed my NAPT and now im in the process of getting a waiver for the alcohol citation.
also when i called to pay the debt they told me my account has no outstanding debt. i never payed it but it just disappeared?

You should be fine getting in assuming the NAPT is passed. Be prepared to answer some questions with the recruiting district CO or XO for the waiver. I was a recruiter and am a Navy Nuke MM.  If you have othe questions about the program or eligibility let me know.  I should be able to answer them or make a call and find out.  Don't be surprised if the recruiter tries to put you into different program initially.  You most likely will require a academic waiver depending on your grades in you math and science courses.  Sometimes these waivers take a bit of time.  If you DEP into another program initially until the waiver comes back,  you will have no problem getting a nuke contract.

As long as your High school GPA never dropped below a 2.0 and you never had a 'D' or 'F' in a high school math class...you shouldnt need a waiver.

Good job on the NAPT.

I would definately tell your recruiter and the Nuke Coordinator about the Financial issue.  Better to deal with it now then to have you get all the way to bootcamp and have it come up and you possibly lose your Nuke contract.
