...what is the pressure drop through the let down orifice after the regen heat exchanger in a pressurized water reactor...how does that work...

   ...what is fluorine 18...

...why were the sub-atmospheric containment pressure requirements (9 psi vs 14.7 psi) for the 7 sub-atmospheric PWR containment buildings recently removed...are the 9 ice condenser PWR containment buildings in some way affected by this decision ..

...from the NPUA..."The NRC has ruled that workers in safety-critical positions, health physics personnel being one of them, will now be regulated on the amount of overtime allowed during outages. They have revised 10CFR26 and included Managing Fatigue. The NRC is now requiring HP Technicians to have three days off every 15 days while working outages. "...is this true...

--- Quote from: Broadzilla on Feb 15, 2008, 03:02 ---Correction, Perry has a MK3 Containment shaped like a dome.

--- End quote ---

Perry's containment is a freestanding steel cylinder topped with an elliptical head.  This is surrounded by a cylindrical concrete shield building that has the same approximate shape as the steel liner.  There is a 5' air gap (annulus) between the concrete building and the steel containment which is maintained at a negative pressure to collect any leakage from the containment.

Regarding the fuel transfer tube, my understanding is that Grand Gulf if the only US plant with a horizontal tube.  The new ESBWR has an inclined system like the remainder of the US BWR 6's.

i thought tht Perry,GG,& Clinton were BWR MK 6's & all have supression pools no Torus.

Actually - I think this only applies to the HP technicians that are fulfilling an emergency response role (i.e. shift tech) - something that contractors rarely do -  ;)

BWR Containments...

Mark I is the Nitrogen inerted Drywell and Torus. The Lightbulb and the Donut inspired this design. These are inside an unremarkable pole barn called a Reactor Building. They are found at BWR 2s, 3s, and 4s. Dresden, Quad Cities, Pilgrim, Duane Arnold, Monticello and almost every body else have these.

Mark II is the vertical standpipe containment. They are also Nitrogen inerted. These are found at BWR 5s. In the Mark I and II the Drywell IS the Primary Containment. LaSalle, Columbia, NMP 2, and Susquehanna have these.

Mark III is the horizontal vent containment. These have a Drywell inside the Primary Containment. These are NOT inerted, you can tour the Primary Containment at power and look down (and hopefully see no bubbles) in the Suppression Pool. since they are not inerted, they have active Hydrogen control systems, such as igniters, mixers, and recombiners.
Some have Containment Spray (Clinton, Perry, Grand Gulf) Some do not (River Bend).

     American Nuclear Power Plants

104 nuclear power reactors at 65 sites in 31 states.

They produce 20% of the America’s electricity.

They are shut down and refueled roughly every two years.

Each reactor’s refueling takes about one month.

Each refueling requires roughly one thousand temporary
additional workers.

Of the 65 sites…

29 sites have 1 reactor…33 sites have 2 reactors…3 sites have 3 reactors.

Only a third of the sites have the famous hour glass shaped cooling towers.

The largest site is Palo Verde, in Arizona.

The largest reactor, Palo Verde 2, produces roughly 1300 MW.

The smallest reactor, Fort Calhoun, produces roughly 500 MW.

The oldest reactor, Oyster Creek, began production in 1969.

The newest reactor, Watts Bar 1, began production in 1996.

Of the 104 reactors…

69 are Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs).

35 are Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs).

PWR’s resemble domes... BWR’s resemble boxes.

Only 9 of the 104 reactors deviate from this general pattern.

Of the 69 PWRs…

48 were designed by Westinghouse (W)…14 by Combustion Engineering (CE)…7 by Babcock & Wilcox (B&W).

48 Westinghouse PWRs…6 are 2 loop…13 are 3 loop…29 are 4 loop.

Each loop in a Westinghouse PWR  has one steam generator and one reactor coolant pump.

The Combustion Engineering and Babcock & Wilcox PWRs all have 2 steam generators and 4 reactor coolant pumps.

Roughly 30 % of American reactors are Westinghouse 4 Loop PWRs.

Of the 35 BWRs…

All were designed by General Electric and are designated models 2 thru 6.

Models 2 (2 reactors), 3 (6 reactors) and 4 (19 reactors) are housed in Mark 1 (torus)  reactor containment buildings.

There are only 4 exceptions and they are housed in Mark 2 reactor containment buildings.

Model 5’s (4 reactors) are housed in Mark 2 (vertical standpipe) reactor containment buildings.

Model 6’s (4 reactors) are housed in Mark 3 (horizontal vent) reactor containment buildings.

Of the 439 nuclear power reactors in the world…

 357 are either PWR’s or BWR’s.
