Job description
**NOTE: The successful candidate, upon acceptance of the position, will initially be placed into a two year rotational assignment in the Quality & Performance Assessment organization at Nine Mile to support independent oversight of Operations.**

The Shift Manager has the overall authority and responsibility for all operations, maintenance and testing activities within the power block to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient generation of electricity. Ensures that all operations activities are performed in accordance with the facility operating license, design base, Federal and State regulations and site administrative controls and procedures.

Description of ideal candidate
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensures that all operations activities are performed in accordance with the facility operating license, design base, Federal and State regulations and site administrative controls and procedures
• Approves and coordinates maintenance activities that occur or are scheduled during the shift. Approves testing and special evolutions conducted during the shift. Reviews and authorizes the installation and removal of temporary modifications. Authorizes troubleshooting in accordance with plant administrative procedures. Ensures the operational surveillance procedures and preventative maintenance procedures are performed as required. Implements emergency and immediate maintenance when required.
• Evaluates abnormal/emergency conditions and ensures that proper corrective actions are promptly initiated, and that proper safety precautions are imposed to protect both on-site and off-site personnel. Initiates event notification reports to the NRC. Initiates the Emergency Response Plan if plant conditions warrant such action and assumes the position of Site Emergency Coordinator until relieved by the Plant General Manager or other designated person.
• Reviews issues for operability/reportability concerns. Monitors operating equipment and collaborates with plant engineers and maintenance groups to keep equipment available for service and in efficient operating condition.
• Directs the maintenance of control room logs and associated records as required to document on-shift operating conditions and activities.
• The Shift Manager enforces training standards, provides on the training/evaluation, conducts on shift training sessions and maintains staff proficiency on emergency and off-normal procedures to ensure that personnel are adequately trained and qualified for assigned duties.
• The Shift Manager is the direct representative of the Plant General Manager (PGM) in operating the unit/s and has the authority to act for the PGM in his/her absence.
• Encourages and maintains participation in utility industry groups. Ensuring adequate technical resources are maintained to support shift operations.
• Manages the planning, scheduling and execution of work.
• Manages /coordinating implementation of work while integrating emergent issues.
• Develops reports and performance indicators.
• Leads meetings to gather and disseminate information.
• Communicates Company policies, procedures, and practices. Promotes two-way communication with employees and resolves employee concerns using appropriate resources as necessary.
• Enforces accident prevention and occupational health work procedures and housekeeping requirements. And ensures safekeeping of company materials, tools, equipment and resources.
• Assigns and observes work. Assures appropriate training for direct reports is accomplished. Explains work procedures and solves work problems. Controls quantity, quality and promptness of work performed as measured against accepted standards.
• Recommends improvements and modifications in organization, procedures, policies, standards, specifications, methods, processes, and equipment within the area of supervision.
• Conducts and completes performance evaluations at regularly scheduled times to identify subordinate strengths and weaknesses and discusses career goals. Provides accurate, timely and constructive performance feedback in order to help others improve and succeed. Seeks opportunities to provide appropriate recognition. Conducts coaching in a positive and productive manner. Counsels employees concerning work problems and productivity.
• Uses teambuilding, goal setting, and change management strategies to promote a productive work environment that values quality of life.
• Provides workgroup input into the department budget and manages workgroup expenses within the approved budget.
• Interfaces with all levels of personnel and external agencies.
• May serve on site committees/teams as required (emergency response, training advisory group, etc)

Job Specifications:
• See specific station technical specification for committed education and experience. Skills and experience as defined in the applicable ANSI Standard to the unit -ANSI -1971 or ANSI –1978 to which the station is committed.
• Must hold and keep active a NRC Senior Reactor Operator License.
• Demonstrated ability to lead people and familiarity with leadership and managerial methods for effective personnel utilization including performance management, coaching and counseling. Supervisory experience preferred.
• Written and oral communication skills and the ability to influence others and clearly state expectations and desired outcomes.
• Analytical and problem solving skills coupled with the ability to make and implement decisions.

1. Ability to meet and maintain unescorted access requirements of a nuclear power plant.

4. Ability to observe and oversee work in a nuclear power plant environment including confined spaces and areas accessible by ladder and narrow passages.
5. Ability to withstand exposure to high noise and extreme temperatures.
6. Ability to read, write, and analyze reports and written materials.
7. Ability to see, hear and speak to perform assigned tasks and maintain proper job safety conditions.
8. Ability to serve on the Emergency Response Organization, when called.
9. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to the performance of the position.
