Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) Sites Map

Nuclear weapons were developed during World War II. For protection, the nation's weapons production facilities were built in remote areas across the country. Also, during and after the war, the government contracted with universities and private companies to research and produce certain items because it was both faster and cheaper than building new government factories or laboratories. Many of these sites are now being cleaned up by the Formerly Utilized Site Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP).

National defense work during and after World War II has been based on a partnership between the government and the private sector. DOE contracts with specialists from the private sector to do the technical work while federal employees direct and manage the work. This partnership continues today as DOE focuses on environmental cleanup. There are 45 FUSRAP sites, of which 15 have been cleaned up.

See Appendix A for a list of the site names and locations. Some dots may represent more than one site.
