Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research facility located on Long Island, New York, on a 5,300-acre campus just north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway. (maps)

BNL has been around since 1947, doing world-class scientific research in physics, medicine, biology, chemistry, environmental science. . . and more! (more on history)

BNL specializes in building and operating large research facilities that are used by our own staff and visiting scientists from academia, government and industry.

BNL is operated for DOE by Brookhaven Science Associates, a partnership of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Battelle Memorial Institute.

BNL has more than 600 research programs going on right now in fields ranging from high-energy physics to drug addiction to weapons nonproliferation. (more on research projects)

Four Nobel Prizes have been given for research done at the Lab, the most recent in 1988. (more on Nobel Prizes)

BNL is the only U.S. Department of Energynational laboratory located in New York State, and one of only nine nationwide. (links to other labs)

BNL has over 3,000 employees, not only scientists and engineers, but also technicians, secretaries, plumbers and other support staff.

More than 4,000 visiting scientists come from all over the world each year to do scientific research at our research facilities and work with our staff.

BNL's 1997 budget was over $400 million, and only $2 million of that was spent on defense-related projects. (more on budget)

The Lab spent $33 million on Long Island in goods and services in 1997. (more on economic impact)

BNL helps Long Island companies benefit from our research through millions of dollars in cooperative research and development agreements. (more on technology transfer)

BNL scientists and other staff are available as free speakers for local clubs, schools and organizations. (request a speaker)

More than 25,000 children and adults took free tours of our Science Museum and our site each year, or participated in our educational programs. (more on the museum and education)

BNL is working to improve our protection of the environment and our relationship with the local community, while pursuing world-class science
