Millstone 1, a boiling-water reactor which began commercial operation in March 1971, last produced power on November 5, 1995, when it shut down for a refueling outage. On July 17, 1998, the Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P), a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities, announced it had decided to permanently close the facility and to pursue final decommissioning of Millstone Unit 1. This announcement was based on the results of an analysis that indicated it might not be economically viable for the company to continue to operate the unit. As of July 21, 1998, all fuel had been removed from the reactor vessel, but CP&L has not yet decided whether to pursue the DECON or the SAFSTOR option. CL&P continues to operate the two other reactors on site, Millstone 2 and 3.
