Quarry operations from Millstone Point in Waterford, Connecticut ended in the early 1960s, and in 1966 construction of New England's largest power-generating complex began. The Connecticut Light and Power Company, The Hartford Electric Light Company, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company joined forces to build the three nuclear electric generating units.

The Millstone 1 unit has been closed since 1996 due to a variety of worker safety problems. The owners have decided to close it permanetly.
