SHIPPINGPORT ATOMIC POWER STATION

The Shippingport Atomic Power Station [SAPS] was managed by Duquesne Light Company for the U.S. Department of Energy. It was located one mile southeast of Midland, Pennsylvania, immediately to the west of Beaver Valley Power Station Units 1 & 2. This 90 MWe pressurized water reactor demonstration plant was shutdown in 1974 and converted to a light water breeder reactor, and resumed operations on October 1, 1977. SAPS terminated operations on October 1, 1982 and has since been decommissioned and decontaminated.
