A steel and concrete tube holding over 600 tons of nuclear waste sits in a secured holding area along the Pacific Ocean at the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, near San Clemente, Calif. In a few weeks, the spent nuclear reactor will leave Southern California by barge for a journey around the tip of South America en route to its final resting place in a disposal facility in South Carolina.
