New York state is home to six operating nuclear plants, four owned by utilities and two run by the New York Power Authority. They provided nearly a quarter of the electricity generated in New York state in 1996. Power produced by a well-run nuclear plant is cheap, but construction overruns and regulatory costs add to the expense of many reactors.
