I am running IE 6 on my computer and every time I start the internet, it asks me to load some for of flash player.  I allowed it to do so and it still asks every time.  THen it always"encounters an error" when I open a new window(hyperlink) and then close it.

I think you are running into an issue that is dealing wtth the patent fight between Microsoft and Sun.  I was having the same type of problem and got it resolved by installing a patch that Microsoft put out specifically for this:
