Cavity Seal.... Save it or Throw it Away?
« on: Nov 13, 2007, 06:52 »
This question is directed more towards the Refuel Floor community, Engineers and techs, whomever has info regarding the question.

Has anybody had any experience with the efforts involved with keeping the Reactor Cavity Seal for future use?

Questions that come to mind;
1. What's the life expectancy while sitting in water in the Storage Pit?
2. When do you decon it? Upon removal or at a later date?
3. How many uses do you get out of the seal?
4. Is the effort viable?
5. Where do you store it for future use?  In the pit or box it up?

What type of cavity seal are you talking about?In all my 18 years I've never seen one stored in water in a pit.Examples: Millstone 2 had a seal with 2 rubber "o-rings" if you will.During reassembly,you removed them and trashed them.(depending on their condition) DC Cook has a segmented seal ring,maybe 12 foot lengths of rubber with backing plates and a cam-lock type bolting system.After removal they get wiped down and put back in a box for next time.

One piece, bladder type.  I believe leaving installed is out of the question.

Same deal with bladder type, remove it and store it in a box.
