Back in 92 I stayed at the military camp ground located a few hundered yards past the main gate.  They had complete accommedations for tents, trailers, 5thwheels and coachs.  It was very cheap.
If your there at the right time you may even have front row seats to a reinactment of the Battle For Grand Gulf.

Located less than a mile from the plant entrance.  Very reasonable rates.  Very nice folks to deal with.  Cell phone signal is not very good in that area.

There is a retired diver there that has a "hotel" style set up.  Each room has two twin beds and its own bath plus a fridge.  There is a community kitchen (full sized) with laundry facilities as well.  Only about 15 minutes from the plant and faily cheap.

I will have to look up the number and repost.   Ohhhhh  he only likes to rent to HPs...

I dont know why :D

Bud Wilson is actually a retired decon superintendent from GGNS.  When he retired, he went to work with Al Seabrex doing diving work.  Maybe the reason he likes RP Techs is because he was in charge of decon when he worked at GGNS.

Hello all!  First time on here- I have been reading the posts for the last couple of days- there is really alot of good info on here!!  Thank you to whom ever posted Bud Wilsons contact info ( can not remember specifically, sorry).  I am doing the upcoming Grand Gulf outage- little nervous- been out of the biz for about 11 years- decided to get back in to it- seemed like the right thing to do at this time- I am actually looking forward getting back into swinging a meter.  Been studying like hell as the last time I took the NUE was back in 1998.  Has it changed much??  Or will the study guides that I have work for me??  Anybody else going to Grand Gulf?  Any info that anyone can give me would be great!!!
Sorry if this is in the wrong area-
Looking forward to conversing with everyone as I get more into this endeavour that I have under taken. ;)

nukeworker has about the best study material unless you have NRRPT study stuff.  the test is different now that is on the computer.  a few questions shouldn't have been on there but if you study some it is not that bad.  i was a house tech at ggns and got on the wrong side of somebody who thought they were really important.  i tried to go back this fall but there aren't any spines strong enough to let me come back there.  plenty of good techs there that will be glad to have you and help you.  look for sir dale.  he can lead you through the jungle there.  don

This hurricane heading toward the Gulf Coast, was Vicksburg lodging overrun when New Orleans and Biloxi were hit a couple of years ago?  Could this be a potential problem?

Might be a good idea to bring a tent...and a raft...maybe put the tent ON the raft...probably want to bring some gas also. What lousey timing, good luck to who ever is going to this outage. I have a friend who went there after a "big one" and many gas stations along the way were closed, had to actually back the econo-car off the trailor to drive many miles to retrieve gas for the RV.

Wow didn't think about the gas supply!   It is bending westward, maybe it will be STP's problem.

Not going there, but live in Brookhaven.  Spent a week at home after Katrina before we went to Peach Bottom, so we saw the worst of it.  Now going back to Peach Bottom two days after the storm, but have some info about the area that you will be interested in.  Hotels all the way to Jackson are already booked solid.  My daughter works at the Cracker Barrel in Brookhaven, and the crowd there from the hotels and the interstate was more than the entire summer.  The gas lines are already 4-5 cars long at each gas station, and prices have shot up from 3.40 to 3.80 in a couple of days .  The walmart ran out of bread three times since thursday, and water keeps getting low, even though they have shipped in multiple pallets.  Now, New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are calling for mandatory evacuations, which means they will be coming North, and the Red Cross shelters are already getting set up.  Don't know how bad it is in Port Gibson, but it is gettin cut throat down here.  Good luck, and may God have mercy on your souls.   :(

I'm staying at the Rainbow Casino.  70/night  Lot of people from New Orleans here now, but should be clearing out tomorrow.  Stay in a DECENT Place!  Some pretty rough area around some of the lower motels.

Just fair warning to all. DO NOT stay at the Dixieanna Motel. Never. ever. even if your option is camping under your vehicle. Trust me.

Stayed at the Roadway inn (Formerly the Days inn), located in Vicksburg. it was ok, but miles above the dreaded Dixieanna. The Roadway Inn was also the only place that i ever saw a white Roach.....

I can personally attest that this is a very nice alternative to a motel.  Everything is included, just move in.  I stayed for 1 1/2 mos. and very happy! :)

It's 25 minutes to Grand Gulf on a Sunday afternoon, with no traffic. It is 25 miles. With outage traffic, more like 45-50 minutes. Even though you don't have to get on the interstate...
At least you guys weren't the ones that bulldozed the Top of the River Restaurant.  >:(

If you are not into RVs, I highly recommend you bite the bullet and stay in one of the I20 motels or the local casinos  (5).  I spent the month of September at GG.  Vicksburg does not offer a lot for furnished apartments or apartments in general.  Internal Vicksburg can be very scary at night.  I would not bring family members with you.  There are minimal restaurants available.

Stay away from Big Sky Apartments.  Management is very friendly upfront but hard to get a straight answer when it's time leave.  If interested, make sure you understand all contractual requirements (and get a copy) before you sign up.  Stay inside at night.
