Wolf Creek lodging is dirt cheap and easy to find in Burlington. The best restaurant in town is the site cafeteria. Contact Coffey County Housing authority, also Burlington Development. The nicest apartment house in town is a 2 1/2 story building with 10 units. 2 BR apt with A/C less than $300/mo. Best thing about Burlington is the free rec. center, probably one of the best anywhere.

THE bank in town is across from the Post Office, and they do have motor vehicle support in town (plates/license).

If you want a life, go to Emporia (45 min), or Topeka (1 hr). The airport at Kansas City is a solid 2-hr drive from the plant.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nearby Burlington is mostly a poor town. The 2 places to look for are Burlington Development, and Coffey County Housing Authority. The small town newspaper has ads but they basically point to those 2 places. Sometimes you can find a share in a house, but they are rare.

There is one decent apartment building in town with 10 units. Dirt cheap. Most everything else is a trailer home, which is a bad idea in springtime Kansas. Make sure it has a storm cellar nearby. You can try Lloyd Sleezer, he sometimes has trailers available, 316-364-2791.

Is you want a real life, and a much longer commute, there are Emporia and Topeka, 45 to 60 min drive.

Burlington has a wonderful free Rec Center built by Wolf Creek money. Nice big community pool. Other than that, and a small movie theatre, not much there. Only chain is Pizza Hut.

Burlington is a solid 2 hours to Kansas City airport.

If you want to get a peek before you go out there, try the Yellow pages on the Internet for apartments/motels. There are a few cheap motels in town, but the only decent newer one is expensive. There is a cheap efficiency unit at the very south end of town.

Wolf Creek is like a small town on site; probably the best restaurant in town is on site, they have great postal and medical facilities.

When I was there I stayed at a place called Universal Inn in Lebo, about halfway between Burlington and Emporia, right off the highway. This motel is actually a prefab building, like an assembly of doublewide trailers, don't know how well it'd do if there were a tornado. The room was okay, clean enough, weekly rate was reasonable.

There was a filthy little kitchenette for the guests to use, if you stay there try not to get a room right next to the communal kitchen. Anytime someone tries to cook something in there it really stinks the place up. :P

There was a small truckstop and diner right next door, not much else. I think there was a small bar in Lebo also.

Emporia is the place to go for a night out. Small college town.  ;)

My husband and I are at the Star Motel in Yates Center and like it.  Management has changed! The manager, Shannon, is very good.  She keeps it clean and is really sweet. Prices are much less than I got by phone in Burlington! You get 10% off at the local BBQ Restaurant;  There is a restaurant and Subway all in walking distance. As well as the local grocer with a good meat section and three gas stations.
200 South Fry (Hwy 75), Yates Center, KS
    620-625-2175  south of Burlington.
My husband like the drive from here.

This is my first time going to Wolf Creek, so I've been busy looking for a place to stay.  I'll share what I've found.

Weekly Hotel rates in the area are generally ridiculous by my standards, even before adding the hotel tax (I think I saw 13.8% somewhere).  I didn't find many hotels over the phone that did anything other than their daily rate regardless of your stay time.  Even at a modest $60 a night or more + tax, a hotel costs thousands per month.  Since Emporia is a college town, I started looking for apartments with flexible leases, and found two out of half a dozen I called that presently allow for month-to-month.  I'm sure there are more, but things were filling in so fast I made my choice and stopped looking.

The one I settled on is Four Seasons Apartments:

1931 W. 24th Ave.
Emporia, Kansas
Leasing: 620-343-7172
Email: 4seasons@cableone.net

The rates they gave me over the phone are:
2 Bedroom, 2 bath: $660/month (I took the last one for this Spring 2011)
1 Bedroom (740 sq. ft.): $565/month
1 Bedroom (640 sq. ft.): $545/month
They mentioned they had smaller stuff but I didn't write it down.

The (refundable) deposit is equal to a months rent.  You'll get it back minus the cost of carpet cleaning.  They were fine with me and my roommate sending in 50% shares of the deposit by check, but we each had our own applications to fill out and pay for.  Rent includes water and trash, but electric, cable, and internet are separate and up to you to figure out.  The application fee is $25 and you must do a credit check.  Deposit and application fee must be mailed.  According to the map, this place is near the bulk of the hotels of Emporia in the northwest part of town along the Interstate.  I figure this puts lots of folks close enough together to start carpools/shuttles for the hour long commutes to work.

The other month-to-month place I found was Trinity Property Group LLC.  I found these folks over the weekend and emailed them while they were closed, here's the response I got Monday:
Quote
Good morning,
Yes, we do have short term leases available on any of our rentals. It sounds like a month-to-month lease is what you need. The rent rate is $25 more per month, and we ask for a 30 day written notice. If you are interested in taking a tour of any of our places, please let me know. If you are shopping for a place long distance, I can also send you more photos of any place you are interested in. I look forward to serving you.

Sincerely,

Rae Ann Warneke
Trinity Property Group LLC
Cell #: (620) 344-2079
RaeAnn@TPGEmporia.com

There's less to say specifically about this place because they have so many properties, so I linked the rentals listing page on their site.  They mentioned mobile homes over the phone, but I didn't ask about them.  Credit check required.  I think they have a similar deposit policy (deposit - carpet cleaning = refund).

Hope this helps.

For Rent one bedroom apartments in Lyndon Ks, about 25 miles north of Wolf Creek.  Apartment has stove and refrigerator app 800 sq. ft. I pay water, sewer & trash.  You pay electricity.  These are very efficient apartments (low elect bills).  $500 per month, add $250 for an additional person, plus $300 deposit (gladly refunded if left ready to rent out once you leave).  No smoking, no pets.  You will need to bring your own bed, or you can rent one locally.  There is a coin operated washer and dryer on site.  Lyndon has a BBQ restauraunt, 2 restaurants, pizza place, Casey's, Dollar General, and very nice grocery store 10 miles away.  Availble now. Call Ray or Karen @785-549-3532 leave a message and phone number if we don't answer, and we will call you back.

98% of the info provided in this quote is still accurate and relevant. Rocking R and Twilight have changed names and owners but they are still at the same location. If you are looking for a house go through the housing authority listed above. The other option is get a motel room first. Once you get on site there will be plenty of options of in-house employees or locals with rentals available.

Rentals are not what I consider "dirt cheap" during outage timeframes. There is some serious gouging that goes on. You are getting there early enough you should be able to lock up a place close to the plant for a reasonable rate. RV parks are plenty but you are closely approaching the time of year that you may not want to be in a travel trailer.

I don't think the Rec Center is "free" anymore but cost is minimal.
Movie theater is closed down, again.
Community pool also closed down.
Best restaurant is definitely not the Heartland Café.
Pizza Hut, Subway, Dairy Queen, and a few privately owned restaurants still in operation.
Grocery store, ShopKo, and Dollar Store
3 gas stations and a laundry mat
1 liquor store
1 bowling alley
No Walmart yet but I hear it is in the works.

Still holds pretty true, not much changes in a small town.

Still no movie theater.
Brand new pool open for business (very nice for a town of ~3000).
Walmart is closed.
They are finally dredging Redmond Reservoir.

Try calling the Maytag store in Burlington and ask for Clint.  (620) 364-2414  He has a few rental properties in Burlington though last time I stayed with him he rented out bedrooms rather than the entire place.  So you may end up having roommates you don't like.  He was charging $150 a week and that included utilities but not cable/internet.  We had to get that set up ourselves and paid it seperately.

A lot of the house people at wolf creek also rent out rooms and apartments but I don't have any contact info.  You can always call the plant and when prompted call the HP desk and ask there if they know anybody wanting to rent out rooms.
