I lived there for 15 years. M1ark about 9 or 10 years. I happen to like people for the most part. In my whole time in SE Michigan I found the people to be the rudest, most ignorant, and convoluted people I ever met. Also you got a nice rental but housing prices are inflated, taxes are too high and the area itself is grey and ugly. Out of the 15 summers and springs I was up there I can say there was one nice spring and one nice summer. So far in Soddy Daisy I'm two for tow on both, heading for 3 for 3. Autumn was very nice there.

If you met a group of nice people they were either people who had moved to the area to work at Fermi or were visiting Canadians.

It's sad when the best thing you can say about an area is well at least it's close to Canada.

The Plant is great. The people working at that plant are first rate. But so far as SE Michigan, I'm glad I'm gone.

i grew up there in the 80s in high school.  one of the worst places i have ever lived and my parents thought so too.  of course i lived in kimberly estates trailer park on telegraph/grafton and that area wasn't very good.

Well I have never been to Soddy Daisy, but I did live in TN for a year and hated it. And I saw plenty of ignorant and rude people in this area too. I guess life is what we make it. I liked Michigan, of course I didn't have to live there long, but most of us don't live in an area long enough to discover its bad parts.

I like where our home is now, Barnwell, SC but are there rude people here? Of course, ignorant ones too. But you have to take the good with the bad and make the most of of it.

If y'all manage to find a place with no ignorant, rude people  please let me know.....but let's keep it a secret from the rest of the world. Monroe, Mich, Philadelphia, TN, Denver, CO, Idaho Falls, ID.....and on and on. They all had their smallmindedbigego'dsuchandsuch's.....but I enjoyed all those places. Maybe a place is just what you make it.

Apartments are few in Monroe. Toledo is about 20 minutes to the south, down interstate 75 where there are undoubtedly many more apartments. There are some houses for rent in Monroe and I have seen some apartments. I would not advise getting a place towards Detroit as the traffic is terrible. There are two campgrounds around Monroe. One is on LaPlaisence Rd. which is pricy and the other is Camp Lord Willing where I stay. Great campground has wifi and fishing. I haven't noticed it to be noisy, except for the ducks, which are in abundance, but they should soon be finished with their mating.

Monroe is medium sized town with about all you could ask for as far as stores. The town has a multitude of parks and golf courses. Once out of town the scenery turns to farmland. I found the people to be friendly and I love working at Fermi 1. If you want the excitement of big city night life, Detroit is to the north and Toledo is to the south both within reasonable driving distances. I hope this has been of some help to you WhoMe

I am looking for a bit of help.  I have been in the business for a long time, but I have never been to Fermi so I know nothing at all about the area that Google maps doesn't show, so - I am coming in on the 16th and looking for a good place to stay.  If anyone needs a house/roommate for the outage I am clean quiet and non-smoking.  If anyone knows a good (and relatively basic/inexpensive) place to stay in the area I would be grateful for a heads up.

Don't forget to do a little sight seeing on your days off. The Cabela's store is just a few miles away and worth the trip. Also try out the MGM casino in Detroit and Casino Windsor in Ontario is beautiful and a fun place to visit.

Countryside Apartments.  (734) 243-6262.   $565 a month for a 1 bedroom. They are willing to pro-rate weekly if needed, which helps me out since I will be at fermi for 5 weeks max.  I stayed there coming up on 3 years ago.  Not the nicest apartments Ive ever stayed at, but they were clean....and we are also talking about monroe...not many new apartments goin up.  Deff. worth the money.  $300 a week for a hotel room gets expensive.

Countryside, if my eversofailing memory serves, is unfurnished, but there's a rental place around the corner that's pretty accomodating.

Should take a look at the new hotel in town called Hotel Sterling.  A combination of hotel rooms to
suites with full size kitchens.  Located Downtown Monroe roughly 8 miles
from plant.  Not the cheapest but reasonable and by far the highest quality!  First Class.  Downtown location is walking distance to a good number of quality bars and restaurants.  Their website is thehotelsterling.com.

Hopefully will wind up there when they start unit 3.  I grew up in this area and I miss it at times.  My kids still live in the area with their mom and it would be nice to spend more time with them than I do on the road.  Being in QA I guess it will be a few years till i get back there on a more permanent basis...which sucks....miss the ice fishing, snowmobiling, deer hunting, hockey and boating on lake Erie...Great Walleye and perch.

I miss it at times also.  Probably spent 12 years of my so called adult life in Monroe or Woodhaven.  Had a house in Woodland Beach a couple of blocks from the lake.  Some very nice people in that stretch of woods.

I have a clean one bedroom furnished apartment in Monroe that's right on the river. Quiet and smoke free. Only 15 minutes from Fermi. Don't stay in a stuffy impersonal motel. Enjoy the view of nature out your backdoor. Kitchen, bath, small living room & kitchen. $45.00 a day including utilities. Newly remodeled. Call 734-241-4158 or email

Also have a relaxing place right on Lake Erie, 2 bedroom with views of the lake so a couple of guys could share costs. Clean, Smoke free. and Fully furnished w/ utilities included. Only $50.00 a day there. De-stress looking at the Great Lake Erie.
Had a couple from IN stay while working an outage on Fermi & they loved it! Many others have also stayed. Don't let this one slip by! Just call
