We make mistakes everyday and your situation is no different.

With cigarette smoking you are free-basing Nicotine and basically getting high yet it is accepted in our society and one of the most addictive substances on the market up there with Morphine. Is it OK? Hum?

As you may know, the chemical process from burning tobacco includes exposure to Polonium in the area of ~5 Rem. Is it OK for a Health Physicist to smoke even though they are supposed to be protecting the health of workers? At this point, it is accepatable.

FFD? Your friend must provide a statement from a treatment / rehabilitation center acknowledging the event and that they are no longer dependent upon Alcohol or whatever the controlled substance was that they tested positive for.

As mentioned in previous posts, one must declare everything and any additonal requirements warranted by the target facility. I would contact the security representative a the facility and find out what their policies are.

We are humans and make mistakes. All large entities have an Employee Assistance Program to assist those who may have crossed the fine line for one reason or another and have been reinstated after losing unescorted access. Your situation is not new. The big question is: What did you do to correct the problem? Was the corrective action driven from within or was it initiated by an outside force?

Call and speak to the horse. Get a staright answer and deal with the situation head on. If the person is an RCT, it will be a good problem solving exercise.

Have an Awesome Week!

Your friend has felt the dark side of 10CFR26.  But they have a chance to overcome stigmatization.

First, put that s*it away if they want to work in this bizz.

Second, find a referral service that would be comparable to an employee assitance program.  Follow the program and be prepared to present a good referral to their new employer.

Third, be up front with Security wherever they wish to work.  Security is required to know, and they are required to tell.

Four, do the job, and never look back.

Five, remember #1.

Tell them good luck from me.

If your friend is a contractor, he may not be able to get into a commercial plant for up to 3 yrs. He may want to try DOE. I've known several commercial FFD 'flukouts' who managed to find gainful employment in the service of our government.
