Another security clearance question
« on: Jun 18, 2008, 01:33 »
A little background, I graduated college last year and started working at the Savannah River Site and I received my DOE Q clearance there.  I worked there for about 8 months and then started a job at a nuclear design firm.  I wanted to get to an operating plant so I just recently received an offer to work at one.

I did receive my Q clearance, but I always worry about bad credit history.  About 5 years ago, I had some charge-offs and just let them go on my credit report without paying them off.  The DOE talked to me about it, I was honest (it was either I finish school or drop out and get a full time job to pay off the debts that I accumulated with an ex-girlfriend) and they gave me a clearance.

Should I have any problem getting my unescorted access clearance at a nuke plant?  I have no other negatives on my record.  I believe that my Q clearance would be higher than any I would get at a Nuke plant, but I think I’m correct in saying that the company does its own clearance instead of the DOE.   Would I recently receiving a Q clearance really help me out in getting my UA clearance?  I just don’t want to leave one job and start another and be told that I did not get a clearance.

Thanks for all help!

A Q clearance requires a far more intensive investigation than getting an unescorted access at a commercial nuke.  Unfortunately they are in no way related.  Having said that, the worst that might happen is that you have another discussion about the credit history.
Hope all works out well. 8)
