more unescorted access questions
« on: Mar 21, 2009, 08:41 »
Hi, I've just been offered an internship position at a nuclear power plant and am curious about what of my blemishes may end up hurting me in passing my background check.  Of course I'll disclose everything. The biggy is I declared bancruptcy 5 years ago.  I made the mistake of applying for every c.card I could in college and racked up almost 20k in debt before I was 23.  I was an idiot.  Anyway, when I declared my thought was, if I don't get out from under these payments, I'll never be able to afford to get back in college and get a real job.  I would be buried by my debt forever.  If I declare, I can start over, and I know no one will believe me, but when I get a real job, I fully intend to have my old accounts reinstated so I can actually pay them back.

I've had nothing but good credit, including buying a car and a house since then.  Will this keep me from gaining access?

Second, when I was in college the first time, I was there on an Army ROTC scholarship.  After two years, I decided it wasn't for me and quit.  That was 8 years ago.  I was a real dumb kid back then.  Will the find that, should I disclose it if the forms don't ask about anything like that, and will it hurt me?

Thanks for the assistance

Disclose EVERYTHING in detail (write notes before you go to see security so you have exact dates and such).  If you're not sure about something then state that also.  Nuke security will find out about everything in your past whether you tell them or not.  You will definitely be denied access for lying about something.  Have good references with phone numbers that will actually reach the references.

I've known a lot of people with mischief in their past that are happily working in nukes.
Keep honking.  I'm reloading.

You will be fine. There are lots of people with lots of debt/bad credit. Just be honest. As for quitting the army ROTC, I don't think that hurt you in any way does it? I am was in ARMY ROTC many moons ago and we weren't actually contractually obligated until the junior year. I guess though, it wouldn't hurt to mention it to be safe, but I am willing to bet they won't care about that. As far as paying off your bad debt someday, I am not sure why you would do that. An honorable intention it is, but you were released from that debt and you should just put your money to work elsewhere. Again, in my opinion.

That is exactly right.  They will look into your credit rating as part of the background check, but if everything is disclosed and you have good history since then, you should have no problem.  And quiting the ROTC program won't have an effect on anything unless you violated some kind of contract terms.  Read the paperwork carefully.  They will ask about crimes that you have been arrested for, cited for, detained for etc.  If there were no legal repercussions for backing out of your ROTC program then it is a non-issue.

the only fly in the ointment is if you apply for UA and are denied, then this will stick with you no matter where you apply for a security clearance.  All plants will ask on your application if you have ever been denied UA....

good luck.
