I had to go to meps first because I hadn't taken the asvab since high school.

OMy navy recruiter said that I can't take the test until I have signed my papers. Is this true? And if so how do I know I will be guaranteed to take it?

If you do that, they'll probably try to throw you into AECF. You can definitely take the NAPT before you sign a contract; I did earlier this year. However, I signed a contract and was assured that I could get nuke if I passed a college math course with a C or better; passed precalculus with an A and my waiver for high school grades was declined. Your recruiter is just telling you this because he/she wants to get you to sign up regardless of what rating they can get you. They will also tell you that you can be arrested for not going after you sign a contract; this is also a lie.

Signing a contract will not help you become a nuke unless it guarantees you NUC in writing. I am currently dealing with this; fortunately I have been researching other options since I decided I wanted to join the Navy.

They just want a contract to fill the quota.  Walk away....if they want you they will come looking for you with hat in hand...and I can guarantee they want you.  Be in charge of your future...dont just follow blindly someone who has no stake in it besides a quota he is trying to meet.

Got a 90 ASVAB in the Manditory High School session

Recruiter pestered me until I agreed to take the test...and then passed the Nuc test

did this in 1 day back in 2000.  Never once did I go anywhere.  I had the Nuc Recruiter drive up from 4-5 hours away just to administer the test to me...nobody else.

I knew I was going to be a Nuke before I had even told my Parents I was joining up...or had signed a single document.

Your recruiter is quite simply lying.

I remember when I joined. I took the ASVAB with the Army and that guy was blown away both by the time it took me and my score... Went to the navy who told me that i would have to take a test to be a nuke so i told them i want something else.
Suddenly my lowest score was "barely" enough that i didnt have to take a test.  So I signed up and here I am, a nuclear-trained ET1(SS), waiting to get out. I hope the world is ready for me and that I am ready for the world.

That recruiter is throwing you a bunch of BS.  When I went in, I was brought up to MEPS where the ASVAB and Nuke Test was given to me that afternoon then the next day I was given the physical and signed papers.  I was also pre-screened as an ET.  You can always back out prior to signing the papers though they will tell you that you cannot.  I would think it would be a good idea if a prior service member also went with you when you see the recruiter.  This way if he lies to you, you have proof.  You can also call the MEPS station directly to talk with the Bull Nuke recruiter.

In addition, they also do not tell you that they (recruiters) get a bonus for every nuke they put in.  This is why it seem that he is acting this way (this may not be the case, but money is a strong motivator).

Can you specify what this "bonus" is?

I don't even know where to start on this.  I first want to clarify that there is absolutely no bonus or cash of any sort for a recruiter for you to join, regardless of what job you pick.  I am also curious as to where are located.  If you have any specific questions about what they can and can't do for you to be a nuke please feel free to ask me.  I am the Nuclear Power Coordinator here in the St. Louis area and I am the one who gives the NAPT (nuke test) along with all of the other waivers and admin to get into this program.  I also saw someone say they prescreened for a specific rate.  That is no longer an option.  Getting into the Nuclear Power Program when you join is just that.  In bootcamp is where your rate is determined.  There is no way to get a contract for nuke ET, EM or MM at meps.

there's gotta be a marketable and profitable niche here,.....

Actually I've thought of this too. What if you set up a kiosk right next to the military recruiters (they always seem to clump together) and charged a fee to give someone the actual skinny on getting into the services. You could even rank the local recruiters, in an attempt to get them to be more honest, via feedback from new enlisted/officer candidates.

Something start to finish like...
So you want to join?... then commend them on their desire to serve and go on to describe the general benefits and commitments of 8 years etc... and then go into the different services/jobs. When the person picks a pipeline give them a "flow chart" of what tests/applications/interviews to expect as well as current signing bonuses to request for.

When I was at MEPS I overheard two guys talking. Both joining the Marines, both going ground, one had a $15k signing bonus, the other got nothing! Not that its all about the money, but in an effort to help these young men and women make a more informed decision this kind of business/service could be very helpful.

Once they are lined up, forward them to the recruiters.

I'd imagine a lot of parents would actually be clients because they'd want to know what their kids are really getting into. (Especially some of these super-over-protective parents today.)

Hopefully the end result would be more honest recruiters and a successful business helping people make good decisions (ie sort of like this forum).

I nominate you to stand outside of a recruiting station (of your choice) and provide prospective service members with answers to the questions that they may have. Make sure that you charge 10% of any signing bonus that they may receive, due to the fact that you helped them get a different job with a better sign on bonus.

Thanks for the nomination, but I must decline at this time. I've got my hands quite full to tell you the truth. However, I do think it would be a valuable service.

Perhaps it is something that some of the vets can look into. Again, the main idea is to help young recruits pick the jobs that really suit their skills the best and not just have some recruiter's quota slammed down their throat.

Many young women and men want to serve, but with this day and age of information, a lot of them want to do their own research because they don't trust the recruiter to tell the whole story.

Does anyone know of online links that would be good portals for research?

I used some from about.com and military.com along with this forum and airwarriors.com ironically enough.

Better recruits, more honest recruiters, stronger military... all sound like good ideas to me.

Most recruiters do a good job...the few that don't give them all a bad name.  Those guys have a tough job to do.  You slamming on them collectively is just wrong.  Someday, after you have served and actually know what it is you are talking about, you might have the right to judge those guys.  As for now, you are just a guy who is clueless perpetuating a stereotype.

Speaking of informed decisions....
1. Did you ask/overhear if the $0 guy scored over 50 on ASVAB?
2. Were both guys going for exact same MOS, or just "ground" ?
3. Did the $15K guy have a bunch of college credits and thus eligible for some little-known incentive program?

See how jumping to your own conclusions without all of the information needed can be detrimental?

Wowie that didn't come across correctly.

A simple honest suggestion got me -2 karma and a lot of harrassing?

I am sure that many recruiters are doing their jobs the best they can. I have met several. At the same time, recruiting is a lot like selling. If recruiting ties itself with money bonuses for the amount of recruits you bring in, or if there is a certain quota you have to hit, then people will start to feel the pressure of "getting the recruit to sign the dotted line." Its just natural, anyone in sales has had that temptation to bend the truth to get the product/service sold.

To combat that temptation, I am simply suggesting a 3rd party source of good information that can be used to verify what the recruiter is saying. I even mentioned getting seperated vets to help bring new recruits in because they would be the most helpfull. Someone with no bonus on the line could serve as a very objective resource.

If you are a recruiter and you are doing a good job, then great. You will be able to explain the challenges and the benefits in a good way and you'll still bring in many recruits. This service would only back up your words and help you retain more of the guys going through your station.

If someone isn't an honest recruiter, then yeah, they may have trouble with this kind of service. At the end of the day though, the needs of the military will be best served by seperated vets helping get new recruits in the doors and those new recruits getting the right information.

Do you like nukeworker.com and the service it provides in giving honest answers? Then why would you have a prolem with a service built on the same concept? Nukeworker makes money serving as a connection between good companies and good workers. I'm glad nukeworker makes money because it is a helpfull service. That's the same idea behind this military recruiting service.

I appreciate Nukeworker.com and the members on here who take time to give good advice.

Btw, I did find a very good source as I looked around again last night.

Looks like someone else liked this idea also.
