Husband is getting out!! YEAH!!! What next???
« on: Oct 21, 2009, 08:38 »
My husband is getting out (assuming he finds a position), problem is we have no idea what to do/what he is qualified for etc.  He is a LT. Did his time on a Fast Attack and is now in a training/teaching position while on shore duty.  Did nuke pipeline/top of his class etc, ..He has an E.E. Degree from the Naval Academy. Completed all of his quals.  He will have his Master Training Specialist cert. by the first part of the year.  Also working on getting his masters.  We are hoping to go back to East TN. so we were looking at TVA or Oak Ridge?  He is VERY nervous about getting out but cant stand the deployments anymore.  He did say that he didn't want to do shift work...which probably limits his choices dramatically.  Any suggestions??

Well, he has a degree from a good school (nobody can claim the USNA is a matchbook cover diploma mill), so that is a start. He can try engineering - that is mostly dayshift, except for projects. He can try training / instructor positions, again mostly days except for certain specific times.

Do a search for those keywords in the forum, more info to be found there. As long as he realizes that being a Lt in the Nav isn't going to make anyone blink, he should be able to find something.

Good luck, and thank him for his service (and thank you for your service)

If he wants to get into Commercial Nuclear, he needs a plan to transition and learn the differences.  ORNL is a big place with many different aspects, opportunities, etc (as you know since you suggest you're originally from E.TN).  Energy Solutions also has an office in Oak Ridge (as another potential employer).  Separately, he may find "shift work" is not exactly what he encountered at Prototype (maybe very much for the better out here).

So no, we don't know what he wants to do and you guys seem to know the opportunities, along with the gross advantages/disadvantages.   What does he want to do?   Does he have a NukeWorker.com profile yet?  LinkedIn.com profile?  Started a resume?

I should not have to say this......

I have talked to some people who have recently interviewed for engineering positions at Bellefonte (near Chattanooga).  They were TVA jobs.  The job title was "system engineering" and your husband would be qualified for that job.  More than half of my system engineering group was made up of people just like your husband.  No shift work normally (there are a few weeks a year where the whole plant staff works shift work).

A broom, a mop, and some Golden Arches.

That was pretty rude, even for your standards. Also inaccurate, which is below your standards. Very bad form and an embarrassment to the rest of us, although I understand you are incapable of being embarrassed for yourself, even when you should be.

A broom, a mop, and some Golden Arches.

After borating Boradzilla's karma, Dave added:

Some of the better jobs out there may require shiftwork, husband may need to be open-minded to that. Other advice on posting his resume here on nukeworker is also excellent, it is how I got a big break coming back into nuclear.

If husband is considering looking at Federal civil service jobs and needs any advice on how to navigate through the whole fedjobs.gov website thing, feel free to PM me.

WOW!!  I am impressed.  How long did it take you to come up with that one?  Must be a good day for you.  I am to assume that you are looking for a buddy for you to talk to at work, sorry to tell you that it wont be my husband.  Keep looking though, sooner or later you will find someone!!   ;)

I know that he is working on his resume as well as a few more certs.  I am sure that he associates shift work with prototype, for all practical purposes he might as well stay in if he would have to work prototype hours.  He isnt closed to the idea but it is very difficult for me to actually work if his schedule is crazy.  We are from East TN. and would love to move back when he gets out.  I was hoping for some input as to other companies for him to look at besides the obvious.  Also has anyone worked with a placement agency?  Which ones are suggested ect..  Ideally he would like to be an instructor.  He loves to teach.
Thanks for your input.  I really appreciate  it!!

Thanks for the back up!!  I am a Navy wife and quite used to ignorance.  Alot more would have to be said for me to even raise an eyebrow.  I just assume that A) they have a very pitiful life and they are completely bored or B) they just didnt get enough hugs from the parents when they were little or C) They weren't taught proper manners as they were growing up.  In this case I think it all three.  Moving on!!

Note: BZ is a Shift Manager at the utility in East TN, the place you are most interested in - so you'll have to deal with him if you go there. :D

In his defense, once you get past the arrogance, grouchiness, bad manners and charm, he is one of the most knowledgeable posters here. Just a wee bit grumpy.  ;)

I tried looking up Bellafonte but no joy.  Would it be under a different name?

Bellefonte is a TVA site that is under construction.  The jobs I was thinking of would be posted through the TVA website.  Shaw Group (in Knoxville) was staffing up with a bunch of engineers last spring for some nuclear project.  It does not look like they are hiring right now (I checked their website) but it is in east TN and worth keeping an eye on.  Honeywell is in east TN and might hire people with nuke navy backgrounds like your husband.  ORNL is constructing - so they may be hiring.  Somebody already mentioned the federal job board - this is where the ORNL jobs would be posted.

Two things, Bellefonte is actually in Alabama. It is about half way between Chattanooga and Huntsville. A lot of displaced Bellefonte workers went to work at Sequoyah. Another possibility for your husband to consider would be the Department of Radiological Health in Tennessee. They do inspections in medical facilities and other privately owned nuclear facilities around the state.
