I am having a little trouble understanding how a clearance works in this situation.

I currently have an active L clearance that was sponsored by a company for an anticipated upcoming job. They are holding the clearance but I am unsure when I will start.  If I take a temporary job with another company that requires a clearance can both company's have a "hold" on my clearance . Or will I be risking losing the clearance from the company who originally sponsored my clearance ?   I didn't know if the company that started it would have to sign paperwork or something to get the clearance back to them and if  it would be up to there discretion to do so ?

Thanks
