US Citizenship is required?
« on: Mar 22, 2010, 09:43 »
Hello everyone,

I have a simple question. Do I need to be a US Citizen to work in a Private nuclear power plant company?
The job that I applied does not say "U.S. Citizenship required".  It requires the ability to acquire and maintain an unescorted access ("Red Badge").

I was reading the 10 CFR part 50: "§ 73.56 Personnel access authorization requirements for nuclear power plants" and I didn't find anything about it is a mandatory requirement to be a U.S. Citizen.

I found the following paragraph that talks about foreign nationals:

"(3) Verification of true identity. Licensees, applicants, and contractors or vendors shall verify the true identity of an individual who is applying for unescorted access or unescorted access authorization in order to ensure that the applicant is the person that he or she has claimed to be. At a minimum, licensees, applicants, and contractors or vendors shall validate that the social security number that the individual has provided is his or hers, and, in the case of foreign nationals, validate the claimed non-immigration status that the individual has provided is correct. In addition, licensees and applicants shall also determine whether the results of the fingerprinting required under § 73.57 confirm the individual’s claimed identity, if such results are available.

And reading the whole section 73.56 I do have all the requirements to be granted the Red Badge.

According to the 10 CFR part 50, foreign nationals are taking into consideration as well as US citizen for the process of unescorted access ("Red Badge").

So, I will apreciate the opinion of this experienced forum,

Thank you

Cathy

No, you do not have to be a U.S. citizen. I have worked with fellow HP/RP folks from several countries. Sweden and Mexico citizens come to mind.
