Is this a good idea?
« on: Apr 01, 2010, 10:33 »
I have been watching this site for awhile now and need to ask a question to some veterans here.

I am currently considering a job change due to the unforeseen future of my current industry.

I joined the Navy 20 yrs ago, and completed six years there.  Since that time I have been in the manufacturing industry.  Now I am 37 yrs old.

I completed NFAS.  Then transfered to A-gang.  There I qualified for all watchstations that were available on time or ahead of schedule while on-board Sub. during some 8 patrols.

From what I have gathered entry level would be NLO, AO, or EO.  I would like to start from this position and move up.  I am located near 2 plants owned by Duke Pwr.  Would it be realistic to expect to get a job there or does someone need to expand there territory and take whatever they can get then use the experience to transfer to where they want to be.  If anyone has any useful information I would like to hear from you.

I understand the shifts are 12 hours, from when to when usually?  How many days in a row?

Another question can people get tours of plants?

Thanks in advance.

If you were A-gang, look at mechanical maintenance positions also - they make more than NLOs, generally work days, get more OT. They don't progress to licenses.

Duke posts positions on their website. If they aren't hiring, looks for other utilities - its all on websites through HR to start.

Tours are about non-existent in today's security climate.  :)

Good luck -
