I need some good industry practices on release of contaminated concrete from a FUSRAP facility.

Any experts out there?

Hmm seems to be a contradiction of terms  ;D

If its contaminated it ain't releasable its LSA-I to good old Utah.

Some facilities in some states allow what's called landfarming low level rubble or resins etc.

See.  We can help others.  This is a great example of the site users helping each other.

I used to get a lot of emails about how the site was helping them.  I don't get some many these days.  Either I'm not helping people, or they are just taking us for granted.  I hope they are just taking us for granted.

We used an Exploranium meter to free release bulk rubble for the decommisioning of Millstone 1.  It is a company out of Canada.  You set the meter by the pile of rubble, preset a time and then walk away as it will regester the K-40 in your body if you stand by it.

We are looking into just tossing it in a railcar and sending it to US Ecology.

We are looking at crushing it and sending it through the Mactec whamodyne sorter.

We are looking at scabbling the outside and releasing the rest of it as clean.

Whats the characterization like? Depth of contaminant, nuclide, contamination pattern, all will drive most efficient disposal method, especially if its a lot of material. Got to start with a good survey. A lot of factors will influence your plans, but a good characterization is the first thing.

They (USACE) want to try and decon it first with a good old college try......

Shortly after they abandon that effort, we will seriously look into shipping it to US Ecology.

All options are still on the table, as of the latest conference call.

What decon method will they employ?  Each method results in a different "Decontamination Factor" (% Removed).

Will they grit blast it? Flapper Wheel it? Wire wheel it? Pressure wash it?  Scabble it?  Shave it?  Dump some chemicals on it?  Smear tuna on it, and employ kittens?
