Site Suggestions
« on: Aug 26, 2010, 12:13 »
I'm looking for suggestions on how we can improve the site.  I'm interested in any random thoughts you have.  This is a brainstorming session, there are no bad ideas.

One thing I have considered is changing the "theme" of the site.  Removing the current look and feel, and replacing it with something a little more minimalist. (See attachment).  This is a little radical, as our 'look' is part of who we are.  We are all familiar with the blue theme I've created, and I know most of our users hate change.  One of the advantages of changing the 'look' would be to make the site load faster.  Compared to other sites on the internet, we are really slow, due to all of the 'stuff' we load to make the site look fancy.  -- do you like the way it looks?  Would you prefer something a little simpler like the attachment?

I've also considered having options for people to pick different templates, the classic look, or a new theme.

Understand that the image above is just a mock-up, I was just curious what the site would look like without all of the 'clutter'.
It doesn't mean that we are going to change anything.  I'm just looking around for ways we can improve the site.

The home page looks great the way it is. Maybe you should though make it to where you don't have to scroll to get to the bottom of the page. Like take the left menus and make them drop down. And instead of the jobs and forum stuff, maybe daily news articles or an about nuke worker.

I appreciate your feedback.

One thing that can't be changed is the job feed and the message board feed on the home page.  Without them, the new user would not know where to find them.  We want to make things as easy as we can for the new folks.

The page scroll really depends on your screen resolution.  We have a lot of people using many different screen sizes.

 Screen Resolutions   Percent Visitors

 1024x768     44.97%
 1280x1024    20.74%
 800x600      19.45%
 Other        9.81%
 1152x864     3.46%
 1600x1200    0.83%
 640x480      0.72%

We don't have to worry about the 640x480 people, but the 800x600 and larger people we have to make sure the site looks good for them.

Move the nukeworker logo to the top center of the home page and make it more dominant as opposed to the advertisers.

On the first look it ofttimes appears that new user was directed to a rad or nuke services home page after hitting the google or yahoo link, etc.

I understand the advertisers pay for what they get, yet it does seem they get top billing as it were, and the "nukeworker.com" is an afterthought on the initial home page view (that first 3 to 5 seconds). Until and if the new user begins scrolling down and across the home page, it can take a moment before that user realizes this is the place he wanted to get to and not a billboard for vendors and services providers.

I think that's a great Idea.  You are 100% correct.  When SEC sponsored the site, people thought they owned it, and now that Bartlett sponsors the site, they think Bartlett owns it.  How can we blame them, the logo's are the same size and position.  Perhaps NukeWorker is only an advertiser.  I'll come up with something to put up there.

The new mock up presented is way too washed out, the contemporary heavier blue theme provides a better contrast with less glare for the eyes to scan around on.

Perhaps we can come up with a simplified version, that uses the same colors.  The simpler we can make it, the easier it will be for Tarbox on his iPhone.

We currently use too many images, and too many tables for layout.  I need to get with the 90's and update the design.  We are using 15 year old technology... and apparently amputated monkeys could do a better job.  [stir]

I was thinking of removing the date the jobs were posted form the home page.  I am also considering r4emoving the name of the company that is posting the jobs.

Please don't.  Please.  Knowing what company is advertising determines if I open it or not. Getting pumped because a plant I want to work is looking for techs., then seeing it is being staffed by a group I don't like is like kissing your sister.  I also don't like the idea of not knowing when a job posted.
I resisted change over a month ago when you started playing with Karma and adding all the emoticons.  Then I saw what a great job you did with the changes.  I'm learning to trust your instinct when it comes to you running your site.

I vote minimalist.  Get some of the 'clutter' off the homepage.

I can do without the company name on the job posting...

Mike:

Who is posting and the date it was posted are essentials.  retread is right, finding out who has the job available after the fact is not desirable.  There are many duplicates posted, which is great, but when company A, B, & X have the same job posted and B is the most desirable to work with, which do I go to first?

How hard is it to click on the job to see who posted it?  It's not like the information will no longer be available.  You jut have to click on the link, it takes 2 seconds, then click the back key.

As for the date, if its on top it was today, if it is at the bottom, it was a day or two ago.

I'm not saying I'm going to change it, I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Maybe have the extra info pop-up if you hover over the job.

The problem we have is that the full job title can't be displayed right now, because some other 'less important' information is being displayed.  I'm tryign to figure out how to display more of the important stuff.

Easy now don't be so touchy. I did not mean blind disabled mentally ill emotionally deprived and other wise unstable monkeys could do it better; I meant they could create this or anyother web site before I could. I like the site pretty much the way it is. I have no trouble navigating the site and it loads up quick enough for me. Any site that is laid out in a logical way I will generally just accept with little question. Again ,its just an expression of my computer illiteracy. I don't know how to give you an example. Click on study or training or maybe education or continuing ed and then link to tech schools and universities that have radiation protection programs or nuke engineering programs. Include schools like Thomas Edison. Something to make it easy for anyone already in the industry or anyone interested in pursuing a degree or certificate to find a simple list of schools. Are the three things in the left-hand column of the forum important to you at all?  How would you feel if I did away with it?

I'm not tied to any of them.  Rating what I could most live without, it would go B, then A, then C.

If you could incorporate 'A' into the existing header (Show unread posts, show unread replies... you have x messages) then you could get rid of all 3.

The software, already has the "new" PM count integrated into the software.  The link up top says "My Messages [1]" right now, because I have an unread message. (Between Profile and Calendar).

I'll look into adding it a SECOND time, just up above that mention of it...

Well, if it is there already, there is no need for a second time. Once will probably be sufficient.

All three can go. I normally glance at a and c, but if they were moved I would look there instead. I realize c is at the bottom .

I like "A" and "C", but I don't care if you moved or changed them, as long as the info is available somewhere..

I really like the "C" spot as a quick reference to who is online..and it makes it easy to spot spambots, copy a link to their profile and send them to Nuclear NASCAR at all hours of the night [sos]

Hmmm... come to think of it..he may want "C" gone..lol

If you are going to add a 'hover' info-block, I wouldn't mind seeing the area/site being staffed before I bothered opening the posting...

This is what is rolling around in the back of my head:

With the discovery that I can make the home page about 30% wider (1024 vs 800), I'm thinking about making some changes.  I'm considering adding a graphic for the jobs (company logo), and displaying 2 lines of info for each job. -- Maybe.  I have to actually make it, and look at it, and see what I think.

What I know for sure, is that I'm going to re-do the home page for sure, and make it 1020 pixels wide instead of 800, and I'm going to alter the truncation of the job categories, and job titles.  I don't know If I'll make any other changes, but I think we should.  We are over due.

First things first.  I have to get the forum software upgraded, and everything else working right.  But expect some changes, soon or later.

The reason I suggested some of the radical changes, is that we are going to redo the site, and its a good time to make the radical changes.

We use too many tables for structure.  That has to stop.  It slows the site down a lot.  I also need to tell the server to compress more stuff. I have a lot to do.  It will probably very slow and gradual, as I'm working 2 jobs at the moment.  But it will happen!

I like that idea!  Removing or relocating A, B, & C would utilize what's turning into wasted space with the higher resolution.  As I said, I've learned to trust your instincts over the years because you're about 12 to 18 months ahead of the rest of us.  When I question it's usually through ignorance, but there's a cure for that.   :P

It's been 2 years, and I never5 made any of the changes suggested.  I'd like to repoen this thread.

I AM going to make some changes this winter.  I AM going to make the site 1024 wide instead of the 800 on a lot of pages.  I AM going to make the nukeworker logo more promenent.  I AM going to make the job listing look better.

Reviewing the whole ABC thing, I think I mahy just movwe it to the right side of the screen, that way it is out of th eway for those with low resolution screens, and added bennifit for those with higher resolution screens.

Everyone please review this thread, skip the whole "ABC" thing, and think abotu cvhanges you'd liek to see to the home page.

I like the extra info on the Jobs listings. However, the super large print for the titles seems a bit much.

Anytime you do something that is different, others will wonder why the change is necessary and evince the opinion that the old way was just fine.  This is the perfectly normal resistance to change that we all feel from time to time.  As one of those people who is old enough to be highly resistant to change, allow me to express the opinion that I like it.

I assume you meen the name of each job, like "Engineer: Associate Engineer", and not the word "JOBS".  If you mean the word "JOBS", please correct me.  The word "JOBS" and "NEWS" are not final, they are just fillers for the mockup.  I do want to change those area, but thats not what I want there.  If you mean the actual job titles for each job, please let me know.  They are 15 point font bold, vs 14 point fopnt unbold in that mockup.  Everything else on the page is also 14 point font in the mockup.

I appreciate the feedback.  Especially yours Chimera.  I am all too aware that people are resistant to change, and the older they are, the more resistant they are.  Thats one reason the opnly changes in that mockup were 1. The New "NukeWorker" title at the top, 2. a wider middle space, and then 2 changes to the jobs section, adding the logo, and a second line of location data.

I was referring to the words "JOBS" and "NEWS". I thought everything else was great.

I am probably younger than most that replied to this thread but I do get very frustrated when the grocery store moves everything around. Now I have to spend twice the time finding the three things I am looking for. So resistance to change isn't limited to the old farts. [2cents]

I'm going to go to a more 'square' layout instead of all of the curves we curently have.  This will allow the site to load a lot faster, and will allow more flexibility in future designs.

Attached is another mockup. What do you think?  I've been looking at it for a few moments, and I like it.  Goign to this square design will allow us a lot more design flexibility, and it will scale better for diferent size screens. (Phones, tablets, laptops, desktops)

Here is a side by side comparison, mostly to scale.  The new layout is larger, and takes up more of the screen, and is easier to read.

Seriously, I like the new masthead and the formatting for the "Jobs" section.  It offers a cleaner presentation of the information contained in that section.

On an equally arbitrary note . . . if'n yas makes a change that I dont like, I'll be sure to holler. ;D

Bet them on what?
Anything that could come up in a thread.

For example, if Macgyver and I bet on an SEC game or Marlin and I bet on an event outcome.

Just an idea.

Another forum that I frequent (www.irishenvy.com) has this option and it is used frequently.

That would make them meaningless.

READ THIS CAREFULLY

The attached mock up is not actually intended to be implemented, its just a sample of how we could change things (you know, give you theme options) with the new design.  So don't freak out, this isn't actually going to happen. (At least not yet ;) )

Click on the little picture below for a larger version.  I didn't embed the Larger version in the message because I know even with 30 point font, people won't read the text, and will fly off the handle.

I do like the banner ad below the site name masthead, among other things.

I've often said that the Facility info section isn't up to my expectation and desires.  I made a mockup today that I think I like.  It's attached.

Basically it has a nice picture, and general information at the top, a blurb about the site below that, then the jobs available, news feed, then all the statistical info/links.

It's a nice clean simple look.

I'm currently working with this section.  I currently its the same criteria, just with new formatting.  After I get the formatting down, I may try working on the criteria again.  I think I have a new trick.

As far as the news formatting goes, I'm still tweaking it, but what do you think of the formatting there so far?

I've updated the live home page with the changes to the jobs feed.

I've also made a big change to the new feed on the home page.  It should me more relevant now.  I wasn't able to make a multi-line news feed look good so I have scraped the idea for now.

I also moved the new forum message section on the home page to the middle, and moved the news feed to the bottom.

I changed the formatting of most all the test to 12 point font from 10.  Better for old peoples eyes, and little cell phone screens.

I changed the way new messages from the forum are formatted.  Instead of the little "new" icon next to new messages, I changes it so the new messages are bold, and the messages you have already read are not bold.

Jobs section too cluttered with company logos. People don't care about the logos. Show me the money and PD.  :)

Minimize margins (too much wasted space on page). This will give space for more info.  ;)

The news section should be bold to aid in scanning headers (much like newspaper headlines).  ;D

I reduced the number of news items to 25.

I liked the old job board.  The company logos are the focus now, but I was never that interested in the company so much as the type of job.  I also liked the one liner for the old job board and the red for the jobs that just got posted.  If you could find a way to go back to the old job board but add the logo in smaller it would be great.  I liked having more info in the same amount of space.

Technically, you have more info now...  The 'old' way didn't have the location.

Losing the red wasn't intended.

Working on reverting back to a modified version of the 'old way' now.  Keep an eye on the index2 link above for up to the second status of the changes as I experiment.

What I'm going to try next is using the old format, but instead of red for the date, bold the new stuff, and non-bold the older stuff, like i fif for the forum and news feeds.  That seems to look good.

Ok, new jobs section formatting is live.

No more logo's, back to old format, plus new titles are bold, older are not bold.  Added location in line with the titles.  Moved job category to behind the titles, instead of before.

This shows edge to edge (margins minimized on left and right sides). That's what I mean.

I like the no logo and bold formats you have incorporated.

I like the way the Discussions topics lose the bold font after use.  I'm not big on the News following Discussions, but....whatever.  ;)

Now that I've used it for a few days, I like it.

I think you should have some icons/emoticons or whatever that are female. :) smart, dumb, fat, skinny, old, pretty, and ugly. :) or at least get some stars with hair haha.

Emoticons/emoji  or avatars?

What emotions would a nuke worker be conveying with fat, skinny, pretty, ugly, stars w/ hair?

Haha! I love all the comments lol
Emoticons, I think. Like these things:  :) :D >:( :o 8) [GH] [spank] [soap] [BH] [boohoo] [pigfly] [sherlock] [navy sub] [pillow] [moo] [Bubbles]

When I am trying to say something like "this little girl is a tattle tale" I would like to enhance the fun of that statement with an emoticon. When I say things like "I do not support that women should be co-ed on subs" I would love an emoticon such as barefoot and pregnant (haha I crack me up) or a little girl skipping rope  ;D

Sometimes I want to reference myself in an emoticon, and a smiley star just doesn't cut it, that's all... and when I make reference to being old (of myself or someone else), it would be nice to have something like a granny in a rocking chair, or a knitting woman... rather than just the old grey beard and cane fella.

Not to make the site all flowery and fluffy, but just to have some alternatives to the male-like emoticons. I know smileys are gender neutral, but you do need something that emits a feminine sense...
