Shipyard RadCon
« on: Nov 03, 2010, 05:45 »
I am currently a shipyard Radcon and am wondering how we are viewed by doe sites(positive or negative). I know i will need the doe-core but is my experience "transferable"? And any advice anyone here has would be great. Just weighing my options right now.

You should be fine in the DOE world, they are typically good at accepting other facilities experience.  Also keep an eye out for shops that request 'Article 108' folks.  There aren't that many, and you might be able to get a premium.

Using that link I posted, I found on the first page a job posting for "SHP, RCT, Shipyard Radcon and Navy Radcon/ELTs"

Sounds like something up your alley.  Did you look in our job board?

This is part of the text from that job:

Quote
Bartlett Nuclear, Inc., The largest supplier of QUALIFIED Radiation Protection/Health Physics Technicians to the American commercial nuclear power industry has an immediate and future need of ANSI qualified 18.1 & 3.1 SHP Techs. If you are looking for outage or non-outage work, we have it. With most of the fall season sites wrapped up there are still a few sites that could use your support. A handful of sites not scheduled for a fall outage have put in requests for SHP techs also. If the commercial power plant scene is not your thing Bartlett Services, Inc. is always looking for solid Sr RCT/HP Techs to support various DOE projects across the country. So no matter what you are looking for commercial outage work, commercial non-outage work, or work in the DOE, we have it for you. With 45 Outages happening this upcoming spring 2011 and with BNI holding the primary contact at 36 of those sites, now is the perfect opportunity to join the winning team and lay the ground work for a productive and prosperous spring season. If you are interested in learning more about what opportunities Bartlett has for you give our Staffing Specialists a call at 800-225-0385 and ask for recruiting.

It sounds to me like that job posting was aimed squarely at you.

Thanks everyone. Yes  I have been looking at the job postings daily and have been getting the email updates. I was just hoping to get in more direct contact with people than just being one in the stack of resumes. Have to add that this site is great and everyone is so friendly and helpful. ;D

You're quite welcome young man.  You can mainly thank Mr. Rennheck, he's the one who started and maintains this site! Marssim ain't too shabby either.  :D :D

Here we would have the opportunity to incorporate two of our favorite topics on the site.
YardBird - (-Yard(-Tu)rd = YardTurd. This would be out of NAVSEA-ELT-MATH-101, a highly sought after, but very elusive manual used by the Navys finest Chemists / RadCon wizards to work their magic.(Topics being ELT lore and good natured giving of the business aka Wally and the Beave). On topic - Knowing what I currently do about stuff, if I was a young(or there abouts) 108 qualified man coming out of the yard - it would be DOE all the way for me.I think your 108 quals. will serve you better at a DOE facility.Commercial plants are OK - BUT..lots of peripheral nonsense to endure. Good Luck! MM2/ELT USS NIMITZ CVN-68  80-84. BOHICA

I started 21 years ago at a shipyard, left after 2 years for commercial work. I have found the NAV-SEA 108 thing to be a favorable qual to have. It has never been a negative. I still consider it to be the most comprehensive training I have ever had. Also considering the failure rate of the 108 training program, I have always been proud of the fact that I made it through. You should have no problem getting a job with that background.

I did just 3 year and 10 months in the NAVSEA program, and I have already managed to escape.  The 108 qualification is a very valued qual in the industry.  I have started the new position in the DOE world....much more money than shipyard, I am a Senior Tech and actually feel like I hold the knowledge of being a Sr Tech, when in the shipyard I was just a high Jr.  Back in the beginning of the year I even got interviewed by TVA. I must say I'm happy to have had my 108, even though the training is stringent, I feel like I know A LOT.  If you ever work DOE, you will know what I'm talking about.  I've only been working DOE for 2 weeks and already I see some crazy stuff....lol!!  Taking some other test are also valuable like the CORE and maybe even NRRPT.

Navy and civilian Art. 108 look great on my resume and I am glad to have them.
As far as jobs that require the quals, they exist, philotechnics use to hire for them along with a couple of others {do web searches}, but they are low paying for the most part. Take the time to study for the core and go DOE or do the outage circuit. You make more money. If you want to stay 108 the shipyards hire on usajobs.com.
Sometimes you just want to say dilligaf and go dfr.
