Rename Fallen Section?

A friend sent me the following PM today:

As I was sitting here today I had a thought. (I guess this thought went through my head because I'm heading to see my Granny probably for the last time.) Couldn't we come up with a better term for those that have left us? Fallen is pretty harsh to me, I do understand where the term comes from as so many of the folks we work with have military back grounds, but lets face it, we aren't out there fighting a war.

Do you think we should rename the fallen section or leave it the way it is?

If we renamed it, what do you think it should be called?

I seem to be in the minority here but "fallen" sounds like a tribute to a serviceman killed in action. I'm not touchy-feely enough to propose another one, but yes I think a more appropriate title could be used.

Mike,

Seeing as how my name may appear under this category (not soon I hope), I think fallen is appropriate.  The only other thing I could think of naming the category is "dead" and I really don't think that's necessary.  Dying's part of living. It is what it is and let's all hope we make the most of what we've got left.

I agree with Marvin. Even though nukeworker is not entirely military related, it still is an appropriate term. Any other term or phrase you change it to will still be sensitive to the event of death.

3. Activity Final
4. e-λt
5. Friends remembered
6. Venturing beyond the Veil
7. Done visiting the Earth
8. No more half-lives
9. In a better place

Fallen is okay, but it reminds me of the I've Fallen and can't get up commercial.

Such a sad topic for the Christmas season.   :(

Leave well enough alone.  'Fallen' has worked for several years...it will work for several more.

Is nothing sacred anymore ?  :) No, really. Fallen is it, I can not begin to come up with another term... perhaps it is my military background, but I would like to think it is more than that. When I think back on many of those that have passed on, I think of them as comrads; those rare friends and family who would stick by you through thick or thin, good or bad times... you know those guys... Bill Mahoney, Jake Sasser, Brad Brown, Debbie Sass... the list is too long to name them all, but you get the drift (I hope you do)... leave it be, please.

Consistency is part of Quality Control. It's been "Fallen" for long enough that it's what the customers expect :)

But I remember a little more history...  Before there was a Nukeworker, there was a fallen nukeworker list out there in webland. It was labeled "Fallen". I always assumed it was carried over to NW at least as an homage.

Minority report: rename it nuclear obituaries. That way their adult children (or nieces and nephews) can search another place to see how much their loved ones mattered to co-workers.

I think "fallen" is appropriate since so many were in the military (or some consider themselves nuclear mercenaries).

If the name must be changed, I guess we could consider…..

  General opinion still favors leaving it as it is. I tend to agree only because I have no alternative. Titles suggested so far are in jest or fall short of a respectful substitute. Sub Vets lists and refers to it's fallen as being on "Eternal Patrol". This is from WWII were most loses were reported as failed to return from patrol and presumed lost which was the most common accounting at the time. NukeWorkers have too diverse a group to easily do this for, other than the fundamental physics of the atom and its transformation, not a lot comes to mind that is reverent enough to work.

Remember that the title of the "Nukeworker" site comes from the username of one of our original members (Bob Reese RIP). Are we now to rename the site itself? Tradition and remembrance go hand in hand. Leave it at "fallen".
