Medical Exams @ RTC
« on: Jan 17, 2012, 08:59 »
Hey everyone,

I've been reading posts in this forum for months and it's really top notch...definitely the best I've come across for those who are signed up to go nuke. However, I've only come across a little bit of info regarding the extra medical exams potential nukes go through @ RTC. I am just wondering if anyone can describe what this means exactly? Do they pull you in every week for some extra blood work, or do they conduct an extensive physical at scheduled intervals throughout boot camp? The reason I ask is because I have dry skin on my hands and feet, which sometimes peels. I'm not sure if we're allowed to have lotion @ boot camp (if you know whether or not we are allowed to have lotion, please let me know), but if we're having physicals every week then I'd like to know what to expect as far as the docs checking our hands and feet thoroughly. I obviously passed the MEPS medical exam, but I was also able to use lotion that day as well. Any information or assistance regarding the types of things to expect from these extra/special medical exams @ RTC and/or whether we are allowed to have lotion there will be greatly appreciated (as I ship out in a couple of months). Thanks!

P.S. You can private message me your answer if you don't want to post a reply.

I GOT JOKES AND JOKES... ok Ill be nice :p

At RTC you will play along with the rest of  the kids until about your 6th week in. You will then do whats called "special physicals". Aviation, sub, seals, swic, and nukes (others too Im sure, been a while). You will do the some degrading physical stuff... When I say head to toe, I mean head to toe.

As far as the peeling hands and feet... Cry about it as soon as you get there. If its a legitimate condition, try to get prescription lotion before you go. They will cater to that. You also have a tiny lock box you can keep random stuff in.

As far as the condition goes, as long it doesn't require steroids, and doesnt interfere with your ability to climb  ladders and don a facemask, you should be ok.

Eczema and Psoriasis are disqualifying for radiation workers in the Navy. However, if it is not diagnosed by a doctor>>>YOU DON"T HAVE IT...don't screw yourself and say you have a medical condition if a doctor hasn't written it in a chart somewhere.

Not quite, they are only disqualifying if you need the medications and they interfere with active duty. I have rosacea, a mild case thank god, but still diagnosed. normal treatments are steroids, but it was never bad enough to "need" the medicine.  Thank goodness for waivers! :)

Thanks for the responses. No, never been to a doc for it so I'm def not going to bring it up on my own. It doesn't appear to be anything serious, like ezcema or psoriasis, but from what I've heard the Navy is not hesitating to chuck people for the smallest things...so I was just wondering if, on the off chance they do notice my skin, they would make a big deal about it. Obviously the use of lotion would help during boot, but we'll see if they allow that (I know you can bring lotion to Marines boot). If anyone else has info on this topic, please let me know. Thanks again.

Being on the outside looking in, there's a legitimate reason why they "chuck people for the smallest things".  If you don't make the cut as a nuke medically, then it probably means you should look at other options, not looking for ways to circumvent the system. If its just your hands and feet, its probably not a big deal.  I had a laundry list of medical defects (seizures, color deficient, kidney stones, intestinal problems) ... ended up getting through fine.  If you have to cheat the system, you do not belong in the system.

Charlie.... didn't you get an early out - Medical?
And then do it again in commercial?
Options??

Or am I remembering wrong (I just don't care enough to do the research... ;) )
Remember who you love. Remember what is sacred. Remember what is true.
Remember that you will die, and that this day is a gift. Remember how you wish to live, may the blessing of the Lord be with you

Had a panic attack on watch, and transient global amnesia that went undiagnosed until I saw my third neurologist. Neither of which were related to anything stated. If anything you should agree with me more instead of trying to debase me.
