Getting degree from TESC with ADSEP
« on: May 09, 2012, 06:40 »
I was transferred off the boat, and placed in transient div, hoping that I would be able to stay in and get a second chance on another boat. In the meantime, since I wasn't doing much, I thought it was a perfect time to go forth working on taking classes and CLEPS for the BSAST Nuclear Engineering Technology degree from TESC. Today, however, I just found out that I am being processed for ADSEP per MILPERSMAN 1910-120.

My question is, if I am seperated, can I still go through TESC with this degree program? Would it matter if I have to start it while I'm still in, or would it matter at all if I'm getting seperated? I wanted to get my degree while I was in, or at least get it started once the time is right. I just got fully qualified a few months back on my boat, and I would have thought being fully qualified gave me a better shot at staying in.

I have about a month or so if I'm ADSEP'd, and I'll still trying to fight to finish my enlistment. I'd hate to start on it now or start it too late and not be able to finish it.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Thomas Edison State College is a school that isn't tied only to the military.  You can get your degree there no matter who you are.  Visit www.tesc.edu to get the ball rolling.  If you get started while you're still active duty, they'll waive the $75.00 application fee.  Get your SMART transcript forwarded directly to TESC once you've applied, and you'll receive credit for all education you've received in your Navy Adventure, no matter how you are discharged.

Well, if you are going to get a degree towards a nuclear career, I'd make sure that whatever reason you are getting a "SEPARATION BY REASON OF CONVENIENCE OF THE GOVERNMENT - PHYSICAL OR MENTAL CONDITIONS" type discharge isn't going to prevent you from ever using that degree. Whichever of the following reasons it is, it could make this a total waste of time.

CONDITIONS
(1) Enuresis (bedwetting).
(2) Sleepwalking and/or Somnambulism.
(3) Dyslexia and other learning disorders.
(4) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
(5) Stammering or Stuttering.
(6) Incapacitating fear of flying confirmed by psychiatric evaluation.
(7) Airsickness, Motion Sickness, and/or Travel Sickness.
(8)Phobic fear of Air, Sea, and Submarine Modes of Transportation.
(9)Uncomplicated Alcoholism or Other Substance Use Disorder.
(10)Mental retardation.
(11)Adjustment Disorders.
(12)Impulse Control Disorders.
(13)Sexual Gender and Identity Disorders paraphilias.
(14)Factitious Disorder.
(15)Obesity.
(16)Over height.
(17)Psuedofolliculitis barbae of the face and/or neck.
(18)Medical Contraindication to the Administration of Required Immunizations.
(19)Significant allergic reaction to stinging insect venom.
(20)Unsanitary habits.
(21)Certain anemias – in the absence of unfitting sequelae – including G6PD deficiency, other inherited Anemia Trait, and Von Willebrand’s Disease.
(22)Allergy to Uniform Clothing or Wool.
(23)Long Sleeper Syndrome.
(24)Hyperlipidemia.

Good Luck

Is Thomas Edison an accredited University?  Is it not an on-line degree?  Would a future employer look at an on-line degree and an actually University degree in the same light? Because a lot of the jobs I have applied for ask for your GPA...  So it would seem to me that a person could easily make a 4.0 on-line and would be lucky to do so at a University in a Nuclear Engineering program.

I know nuclear utility VPs with the TESC degree, so draw your own conclusions.

And the TESC degree isn't a nuclear engineering degree.

And they are working on accreditation. The Excelsior degree is accredited.

In conclusion, the TESC degree is just fine for commercial nuclear power. You can even be an STA with it.

Speaking from someone who went through ADSEP, got my Bachelors from TESC in Nuclear Engineering Technology, and is now working in radiation safety it worked out alright for me. I am not currently in the commercial nuke world though and I am in radiation safety not operations. TESC is accredited as a school, but currently the degree is not ABET accredited. If you are going to use the GI Bill then TESC is very easy to work with and I never had any problems. Good Luck!
