Hello all,

I am currently finishing up A-school in SC as an EM.  I'm just trying to plan ahead a little bit, and I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge about what the difference in job opportunities would be between doing 6 years and getting a degree vs. doing 8 years, getting the EWS qual, and a degree.

I am tossing around the idea of getting the Thomas Edision degree (just because it is quick and easy) and then working on an actual Engineering Masters.  I'm also going to look into undergrad engineering degree from a university that offers an online program.

If anyone has any feedback on the topic I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, toss your attention over to these threads and do the math that works best for you,...

You could also focus on just getting through the NNPP while you're at it,...

6 and out = NLO.

8 and out with legit EWS and degree = SRO. Maintenance supervisor of some sort is another possibility.

This is only assuming commercial nuclear power as a goal.

I would give any nuke the same advice:  the same things things that helpyou succeed in the Navy will help you succeed when you get out.  If you have the ability to qualify EWS, you should.  If you can earn that degree you should.  BTW, the TESC "technical" degree (achieved by taking a minimal of classes and paying a fee) is worth more than a B.S. in business  earned by going to college at night and taking PACE courses on the boat.  Key word is "technical" (at least at my plant).
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.

Not many undergrad engineering programs online. www.und.edu has or had some options.

Put the PS3 down and take a PACE course whenever they are offered. Never miss a chance to get a few credits. Take some DANTES/CLEP's while they are free.
You are not too busy. You will not be too busy. I mean, you're an EM! Of course you won't be busy!

Shop for some Master's programs and make sure that the TESC degree will satisfy the requirements. I know some people trying to use it for a Masters and they are having some issues meeting minimum requirements.

I personally would put the degree before the EWS qual on my post navy career goals. But, I would still try to get EWS, just outside of the industry they won't respect it the same.

Good Luck
