My advice - Qualify everything you can.  At the end of the day though, it is your ability/personality that will get you promoted, hired, or respected.  Planning is counter productive.  Be an operator - know more than everyone else... That is, strive everyday to know more than yesterday.  Above all, watch what and how others do things better than you and emulate their success by doing it also, and if you can... Do it  better.  Never kiss ass, we all smell it, we do not like it.

By the way, you should never think of yourself as a "nukelette", instead refer to yourself as an "undocumented, commercially challenged operator."
