Q clearance escorts?

When I worked at LANL, we were in an area that required an L (pretty much everywhere was L or Q), many of us did not have clearance, so we had an escort.

I have worked at 6 DOE sites and they are no different than the commercial industry.  If you have to enter an area that requires an "L" or "Q" then you must be escorted if you have not been through the background screening and been issued the clearance.  That is no different than the commercial industry where if you have to enter the owner controlled or protected areas and do not have a clearance you must be escorted.  You can work almost everywhere else without an escort as long as you don't need to go into a cleared area.

Uranium processing facility in NM converts ore to yellow cake and/or yellow cake to UF6 for enrichment. We still need to mine U nat for fuel.

All DOE sites involved in the fuel cycle are L or Q. Escorts are required for those uncleared temp workers. The numbers vary on escort to visitor ratio (1:3 at some sites, 1:5 at others).

I had an escort at SRNL until my L came through (even to the bathroom). Before the Naval Fuels Complex was torn down at SRS, certain rooms were Q access (for a shutdown facility). Most DOE sites have clearance issue areas (a lot of it legacy).
