Job Opportunities?
« on: Oct 22, 2012, 03:46 »
I am a recently separated Nuke ET (served 9 years). I was EWS qualified, Master Training Specialist, I have my BS in Nuclear Engineering Technology and an MBA and was wondering what kind of job opportunities I have with my experience and education? What position can I start at? How much could I start at? I really want to stay in engineering but I want an opportunity to go to management. I am open to moving just about anywhere but my wife and I are looking mostly at moving to Texas. I look forward to what everyone has to say. Thanks for your help.

Should have been "their" not "there." Stand by for the lashings.

What is a "searh function"?

A close friend got his MBA from Boston U shortly after getting out.  He couldn't find a job outside the nuke industry (at what he perceived as reasonable pay, of course).  Why you may ask?

Cause he had no applicable experience to use that MBA with/for!

It's clear you have put forth little effort to find your realistic opportunities.  That's suprising to me, because you've clearly put forth some effort into developing your resume.  You cannot be an engineer with a tech degree.  Or at least not a real engineer = paid like one, at a nuke plant or any respectable engineering firm.  Or even with the federal government.  You don't even screen.  As for staying in the nuke community, you screen for the same positions available to me when I got out after 6 years, without a degree:

SRO
EO/NLO/AO
IMD Supervisor
IMD Planner
Training Instructor

The MBA could be beneficial in project management, or once you reach the Plant Manager level.  Maybe you'll get hired for one of those??

Get rid of your sense of entitlement.

Thank you for the information. I don't really feel as if I'm entitled to anything, I just want to make a good life choice. I don't want to take a career path that takes me away from nuclear power if it is not a good decision. I have done a lot of web searches to find what kind of jobs could be applicable with experience in nuclear power and it is difficult to find common ground.

I feel it would be a poor choice if I took a starting position that ignored all the nuclear power experience. Do you think going into alternative energy could be a decent transition?

Alternative energy is kind of vague. Do you want to put up windmills? Do you want to install solar panels? Or do you want to grow corn for biofuels?

Not a bad idea,...

Perhaps you should posit your question at sunworker.com, this is nukeworker.com.

I was thinking more in the direction of solar power.

Solyndra failed, and FirstSolar is barely hanging on with negative earnings, by offering a complete A/E service for the remaining projects in its portfolio.

The Production Tax Credit more than likely isn't coming back for a year or two, because there are larger priorities tax policy wise, and wind projects are already being sold off for loose change on the dollar due to PTC and siting hassles.

Either way, those few companies still building green-wash power production don't really look for long-form pre-crits or EWS on a resume. Might as well stick with that nuclear thing.

Nuclear costs around 6-8 dollars/MW to generate.

Wind and solar costs around 60-65 dollars/MW to generate.

Wholesale electricity prices are in the high 20's/low 30's/MW.

You tell me which generating source is not economical to run.

Justin

PS There's no jobs available. Re-enlist.

Even in the worst economy, people need to take a s**t.  Working at a Water Treatment or sewage plant could be some options.

Possible SRO - if your EWS was >2 yrs.
Probable AO - just like a 6 and outer
Possible I&C (Instrument & Controls) tech - less shift work.
Possible maintenance (I&C) instructor - dayshift in an office environment.

Your nuclear experience is grammer school compared to commercial. Yup, you did good, took advantage of opportunities, ready to make the next step... but it could be at entry level, to get your foot in the door. There are 20 applicants for every job in commercial. At least 5 will be as well qualified as you. Most started looking before they got out, instead of after.

Thanks for your service, good luck

For Nuclear, you'll probably be looking at a trainer position(know someone that got hired for a training position @ Duke Power recently that has a MBA also), direct SRO, or like maintenance supervisor. I'm basing this on jobs my husband interviewed for recently. Outside of nuclear look at BAESystems or other defense type companies like that. They like hiring Navy Nukes and need people with security clearance and training experience. They also pay well and I think they have something in Fort Worth.

If anyone suggest that it is difficult to get a job in commercial nuclear. Don't pay too much attention to that. My husband recently got hired in a direct SRO position and 3 other Navy guys that he knows just got picked up for the same class. Plus,3 of the 4 interviewers were ex-Navy Nukes. I heard that a lot when I posted questions. Many said that Navy means nothing when trying to find a job in commercial nuclear which made us worry but it did not prove to be the case. He got plenty of job interviews and we picked the place we wanted to live. Timing is critical, though. We wanted to stay in the Southeast so that may not be the case in other areas. As for the pay...not sure I should post that but my husband is an E-9 and his pay is going down a lot even with retirement when you calculate the added taxes, etc. Best advice: save up for the transition.
Good Luck =)

Just realized you are already out. Better start networking on LinkedIn and getting those resumes out. My husband got hired in early october and starts in Jan. He started looking 6 months prior but didn't get interviews until 3 months out. The interview process takes time. Apply a lot of different places and read the other threads on resume tips. Most important things to land an interview: 1.keyword optimize your resume or it might get thrown out by a computer. 2. network, network, network. Start with LinkedIn.
