Knowing someone on the inside?
« on: Oct 31, 2012, 06:06 »
Hello,

I recently applied for a Nuclear Security Officer position at a local power plant. I went through the on-line application process, answering all questions, submitting cover letter and resume, etc. It has been a couple of weeks since and I noticed just a few days ago they took the position off of their website. I assume they reached a great amount of candidates and are now going through the applications they received.

Since then I met someone who works security at this particular plant through a mutual friend. This person offered to take my resume to the Security Supervisor of the plant to "better my chances" of a interview.

My question is has anybody had a similar experience with knowing someone on the inside to better their chances of attaining a position? If so do you have any advice? I want to follow up with this guy so badly but I feel that it is out of his hands.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It all depends on the hiring manager and HR. You always have to go through the process you described in your first paragraph, whether you know someone or not.

I hand deliver resumes frequently. It certainly can't hurt.

Thanks Justin!

The more I thought about it the more it bothered me. I thought what if this person wasn't in good standing with his supervisor or did he even turn it in at all? I guess I psych myself out to much. I'll let you know if it ended up working out or not.

Thanks again.

When I was hired, there were 600 applicants for 50 interviews/testing for final hiring of 17.  It does help to know someone already working but like it was already said, make sure that person is "in good standing" with managment.  Follow up to make sure your resume was recieved, make yourself look interested.    Good luck!!

I really appreciate all of the info, thanks everyone! I really don't have a contact number for the HR department to the plant. I don't know if it is their decision or the parent company's on who they hire. But I will follow up with the person who I gave my resume to today and keep everyone posted on the situation when I find out more info.

Thanks again!

Well here is an update on my situation. I tried contacting the person who gave my resume to their supervisor, no answer back from him. It has been over a month since I submitted my application online. I believe my next option is to try to get a contact number for the plant.

I guess I'm getting impatient waiting to hear back from the company, should it take this long for them to go through the list of applicants? I have been checking their website and my application is still listed as "In process". I think after the the holiday weekend I'm going to try to find a number for the HR of the plant and inquire the status of my application.

I will update as soon as I have more information.

It sounds to me like they are right on schedule. More than a month is common. With Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years coming up, people using up their vacation and end of year paperwork; don't be surprised if you do not hear anything until after the first of the year.

Ditto. A recruiter just informed me that there will be no decisions made until after the 1st of the year. Sometimes responses are fast--sometimes they're normal.

Hey Guys,

Here's an update to my most recent post last week. I got called for an interview! It's going to be in a couple of days and I'm feeling pretty confident about it. I don't know if the guy that works there pulled for me to get an interview or not, but I did recently speak with him and he gave me some good pointers. I was told it was going to be the plant's HR director and the Head of Security giving the interview. I feel like I interview well and I know I have the experience, so hopefully I will make a good impression. All I can do is give it my best, the rest is left up to their decision and out of my hands.

I greatly appreciate all of the info from everyone on this site. I will give updates as soon as I have more information.

Thanks,

Hey everyone!! I haven't been on in a while, but I was wondering if someone might be able to help me.

I applied for a position at Nine Mile Point (Oswego, NY), and I was wondering if anyone knew someone in the HR department that I might be able to get a hold of so that I may check the status of my application.

Please let me know if you do as I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

An Ops manager or assistant Ops manager name would be infinitely more useful than an HR rep (assuming the job you're applying for is in Ops).

It kind of is, and it also kind of isn't. I applied for an administrative specialist position but for the operations department.

If anyone has the names for the ops manager or assistant ops manager, I'll take that too. I exceed the qualifications for this position, and would like to check on the status. However my efforts at finding the necessary information I need have been unsuccessful. If anyone can help me at all I would appreciate it ten times over.

Lesson learned for you people...., get business cards from each person in your interview.

You should be sending them thank you notes anyway, IMO.

Hello Everyone,

I had my interview today! Although it wasn't my best performance I still think I did well. At the end of the interview I was asked to fill out a consent form for a background investigation. When the interviewer asked his secretary to have me fill the form out she responded back almost excitedly with "Oh Ok". I hope that means that not all persons who interviewed got to the background investigation phase.

Does anybody have any info pertaining to maybe how I did? Like I said I think I was decent during the interview but filling out the consent to a background check really lifted my spirits.

Anyway you guys are great for providing info and insight to people like me wanting to get into the Nuke industry. Many thanks in advance. I will keep you all updated as soon as I have more information.

Thanks,
