I'm new and have a few questions for you.
« on: Feb 10, 2013, 03:46 »
I would like to say hello to every one as I am new here.  I have been checking out this forum for the past few hours and learned a lot so far in that short amount of time, but still have a few questions to ask you.

I am 23 years old, I just received my Associates in Science, and have zero experience in the nuclear energy field.  Anyways, about four days ago I noticed an opening at the Byron Station in Byron, IL for an opening as Instrument and Controls Tech.  I read the job description and I was very interested in it so I applied.  Well, yesterday (to my surprise) I received an email from HR telling me they received my application and would like to talk to me this Tuesday.  I am very shocked to have heard anything back, because I have no experience in this field.

My question is when HR calls me this Tuesday, what kind of questions is she going to ask me and what can I do to prepare for her phone call?  Even though I meet their minimum requirements for this position (HS diploma, able to work different shifts, receive unescorted nuc access, and teamwork and organizational skills) I still feel under qualified.  I really want this job and I want to have the best shot at getting it.

Thanks so much in advance!

Most likely they may want to schedule a time for you to come in for pre-employment testing and/or an interview.  HR is there to make sure you do indeed meet the requirements before advancing you to the next stage.

Don't sweat a lack of experience.  It is better to say you don't know than to speculate or assume.  The industry will teach you everything they want you to do.  They want people with integrity and able to learn.

The testing may be one or more of the following: BMST, MASS or TECH.  Interviewing is typically based on STAR techniques.

Good luck!

Don't sweat the phone interview, when I had mine they didn't ask me anything difficult at all, I think the only question I was asked was actually something about my most desirable traits and the rest was just explaining how the testing and rest of the hiring process went and a little about the pay and job description.

I did a phone interview for a different position in November.  They just want to make sure what they are getting.  For me it was about my previous experience.  Some specifics on my degree and coursework.  It was only about 10 to 15 minutes and they had me set up to take the poss and bmst.  Hr may ask you for your transcripts slit would help to have a digital copy to send.  Also I would recommend having one to look at for the interview.  They specifically asked me what math and science courses I have taken.

This was for an operations position so it could be different.   I assume the interview will be very casual.  Just throwing my two cents in there.

Also, the job application I filled out said I need to pass the TECH test.  I can't seem to find the practice TECH test on this site.  If someone can link me the practice test that be great.

I'm confused, okay not really.

Did you mean here at NW?  Or, on the net?  Or, elsewhere?

The TECH test is one of the EEI tests.  They should give you a log-in and password to review what's on the test when you schedule.

Or you could just look below,,,

To elaborate on what Mac just said.  There isn't a TECH test on this site.  But there are about 100 threads (a few of which he linked) on this site that talk extensively about the TECH, MASS, POSS and other EEI tests to include links to offsite practice tests, study guides, test taking suggestions and success (and failure) stories.

Scroll to the top of any page on this site and you'll see some links labeled "Home | Search | Help | Advertising | Contact Us"  Click on the Search link.

If you enter TECH Test into the top Search box (Google Search of this site) you will get 2,170 Search results.  Just scroll past the 4 Google ads.

That Search box will be your friend.

Or try the links Mac provided.  He was nice enough to do your Search for you, and took the time to provide some of the relevant links.

If you tried the SECOND Search link on the Search page, the forum only Search, the forum would have returned 100 results,  the first 7 clearly read "TECH Test".  So Mac's confusion is how did you Search our "this" site and not find the information, which you should have done before posting.  If you were referring to the site you filled the job application out on, you still should have Searched our site before posting.  You'll find out that our members are very knowledgeable and friendly, however answering the same question more than 100 times is their limit, at that point they may direct you to use the Search function.

Welcome to the forum, and happy Hunting.
