For me, it's the fact that most procedures now treat me like an apprentice. I now have no use of the 30+ years of experience because the procedures limit my actions and responses. To count a smear in the field from a CA, I now have make a plastic mat to count them on, no matter where you are. And the pad has to be posted as a CA.

you should go on the road.  might enjoy it!  i was house twice and thought I didn't like the nuclear industry.  but going on the road showed me there are some good places out there.  plus it is easier to like a place for 2-6 months vice 10 years.  just sayin!

How about having to put on surgeons gloves everytime a SAM alarms before removing the item.......even if the item is an Operator's lunch (in a plastic store bag of course, because, you know, they dont attract Radon...right?) he is trying to get into the Control Room?  And the hundred times it alarms EVERYDAY due to workers cramming it full of gloves....that they HAVE to get out of the RCA   >:(

Simple, because when people don't like something you did, or decided they won't come to you to share their grievance.

I learned, the hard way, the other day, that tightening a loose hand wheel nut is beyond what an operator is allowed to do, here. Instead, I should have aborted the test, written a CR, and waited for the process to send a mechanic out to complete the 10 second task. O.o

Is that the industry?  ...or the plant?  ...the world?

Hope things get better for you!  :)

Sounds like a generic issue of any business, I suspect there is more that is best left unsaid.    [GH] [coffee]

You have my sympathy here.  [BH] Lessening acceptance of "Tool Box Knowledge" and escalating programmatic control is a frustrating trend in commercial power and DOE. I understand why and accept it, but anyone who has worked in the business for a long time has to feel a little handcuffed.

On top of this add the inefficiencies induced by a security program which adds inordinate costs to every kilowatt hour, plus the looming spectre of inexpensive 1000Mw natural gas plants which can come online in two years, plus the pending corporate burden of enhanced spent fuel transport and storage final rules and the conclusion is that Kewaunee is the vanguard of a new paradigm,...

been there, dun that,... the doormat to hell does not read "welcome", the doormat to hell reads "it's just business"

You know... I got banned from a nuclear plant for 18 years because I put text on a website that said "Joe Sitecoordinator sucks".  I hope security at your site doesn't see your dismay with the industry and decide you are a security risk.

Hey BZ are you talking about something like this,,, "Toxic Mngmnt of Byron Nuclear Plant"?

Asked if Byron’s safety culture and work conditions demonstrate any long-term tendency toward improvement, one operator said, “It can seem like things are getting better. But then you realize you’ve just gotten used to it being so bad. Basically, we’re circling the drain, and as long as we don’t go in, no one cares how close we get.”

I saw that article. Byron must be horrible. To be honest my management has always treated me quite well and have never once implied I did wrong both times I made the decision to trip the reactor. They also haven't ever pressured me to make a decision I wouldn't otherwise make.

I wonder what percentage is fact and what percentage is fiction. A scary article if the percentages lean a certain way. Interesting read just the same. How did you find the article? Google?

It was sent to me via facebook. The parts I take issue with are when people say So and So died due to stress induced by... or So and So committed suicide due to such and such.

I agree. With everything saved on the internet for eons...never know when a family member might discover something and believe it. Back to the article...with so many "comments" from Byron "employees", you have to wonder about the numerous sources for the article. Are there that many with an axe to grind? All it takes is a couple of knuckleheads with misinformation...

I agree.  I earned two Licenses, my RO and ten upgraded to SRO.  So the three proudest days were when I received those licenses and then the day the letter came (after I took early retirement) that said your utility has determined that you no long need your license.

Hang in there BZ, your a top notch guy and as I am sure you know there are ruts in this industry but there are always ends to ruts as opposed to graves which as we all know have no end.
