Found the Co-60 outside of it's storage.  Even my t-ball navy nuke training tells me those high jackers are getting the death penalty for this theft.

   Maybe not, this is not the first time this happened in Mexico. We initially installed radiation detectors because of this incident not the threat of terrorism. No one died but a couple of them are sterile now.

In either case the actual outcome in a similar case was no fatalities. The internals of these machines are typically small round pellets and it is likely that only a portion of them at time was released no way of knowing how long or in what geometry the pellets were in for this incident. In the Juarez incident the pellets were found on the road and in tires over a 200 mile route to the smelter. I believe the pellets were 2 curies apiece picture these little BBs rolling around in the bed of a pickup truck that is what the geometry was, the exposure in the cab was 50 R/hr and the highest exposure was a couple of hundred Rem.

6 detained in Mexico theft of radioactive material Cobalt-60


December 6, 2013 (MEXICO CITY) --  Six people being tested for possible radiation exposure in a hospital in central Mexico are suspects in the theft of highly radioactive cobalt-60, a government official said Friday.

The official said the six were arrested Thursday and taken to the general hospital in Pachuca for observation and testing for radiation exposure. Once they are cleared, they will be turned over to federal authorities in connection with the case of a cargo truck stolen Monday at gunpoint that was carrying the extremely dangerous material.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

 Hidalgo state Health Minister Pedro Luis Noble said Friday that the six suffered from skin irritations and dizziness, but that none are in grave condition and may be released soon. Only one was vomiting, a sign of radiation poisoning.

But based on the tests, "none are showing immediate signs of radiation poisoning," Noble told Foro TV.
