A school as dual military married female?
« on: Mar 27, 2014, 02:11 »
I'm new to this forum but I have found it to be a good source of information. Here are the basics,  I am currently in DEP supposed to leave in November, however I was offered a chance to leave in June as of yesterday.  My husband and I have been married for almost two years and he is a marine.  He's on his second enlistment but doesn't plan to do another.  We are totally comfortable with long distance as he did a two year duty station in Japan.  Also he will be leaving this summer for a couple months likely around the time I would leave for basic if I choose to leave earlier than my current date.

My questions are
1. Opinions on whether he should try to be stationed near SC while I am in school? I know the school time varies depending on rate he would not be able to request orders for two years so likely I would finish school and he would be stuck in SC...
2. How frequently are people put on hold to wait for classes to open up etc?
3. Barracks for first thirty days of A school?

Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge.

It's been a few years (4-ish) since I was in the pipeline, but what I remember from my time is:

If he can't put in an orders request for two years, it would probably be more beneficial for him to request a station near the homeport for your first ship as opposed to the training facility. That said...

Should you pick up as a MM as opposed to an EM or ET, expect some holds. This is pretty anecdotal but the average hold time for an MM during my time was 9 months to a year. There are just too many MMs to force through the pipeline at once and if a prototype goes down for extended maintenance (like the recent overhaul of the 626) or something unforeseen (whatever it was that happened in NY back around 09), that hold time drastically and suddenly increases. I, personally, was put on hold for nearly two years while in the pipeline as a MM and that was without medical issues, pregnancy, or NJP. Just straight up admin holds while waiting on paperwork or classes.

If you're a dual mil marriage with your husband stationed elsewhere, you'll be in barracks for all of A and Power School. No BAH unless you both live/are stationed in the same region.
