NukeWorker Encryption
« on: Aug 27, 2014, 09:36 »
I'm working on converting the site over to an encrypted connection.  This means that you will get to see the nice green padlock type connection.

You can test it out here: https://www.nukeworker.com

I have a long ways to go to get the whole site compliant.  When I made the site, I hard coded a lot of links to images, so now I have to check the 1000's of pages and change all the links, and try to figure out what else it might break.  However, when we are done, the whole site will be encrypted from stem to stern.

Update:

I have the home page locked down (as seen above) and I have the forum locked down (encrypted with SSL).

However, please note that if you post an image in the forum with "http" instead of "https" it will 'break' the beautiful lock.  The rest of the page is still encrypted, but that image isn't so it's not 100% locked down.  You can fix this by changing it to https if the image you are linking to supports it.

I'm slowly going through the site file by file (100,000's of files) and fixing them.  I tried doing a global search and replace and it rendered the site useless, forcing me to restore a backup one night.

There is a lot involved in this process, but I think it's worth it.

TLDR; When embedding images, use 'https' instead of 'http' if you can.

A see that a person having a yahoo IM screen name in their profile also embeds a non-encrypted image.  MY OCD is not going to like this.

The job board and photo gallery (and and) still needs to be updated.  I'm working on it.

Update:  Photo Gallery is updated.  Let me know if you have any problems with it.

The youtube plugin (feature) won't work with the s in there, you will have to remove that to get it to work.  I would put the effort in to fix that, except I plan to update the whole forum software to a newer version after the fall outage season.  When I do that, all these 'old' extra's will be lost, and I will need to find 'new' extra's to replace them.  It's very likely that the 'new' extra's will work correctly.

what should be the default for you tube going forward?

So... If you use the youtube plugin... you have to remove the "s" in the https for it to work.  But if you so that, whne you view the site locked down via https, then it won't show un encrypted date like the unencrypted youtube video.

I'll see if there is an update, and if there isn't, I'll see if I can't figure it out.

Ok, I 'fixed' youtube, to REQUIRE the 's' now.  This should fix 2 problems, and make one big one.  It fixes the issue with youtube defaulting to the s, and people having to take it out every time, and it fixes the issue with not displaying them when using the site encrypted.  However, all old videos will need to be corrected to include the s.

If you see: #Invalid YouTube Link#

Edit the message and change 'http://' to 'https://'

How many pages did you get done?  I looked at your last 7 pages before I quit looking.  I used the sites "censored word" function (which we don't use) to replace "http://www,youtube.com" with https://www,youtube.com. I tested it with some of Marlin's posts (Dave started Editing his posts too), and it seemed to work.
If that didn't work, I was going to take a chance of FUBAR'ing the site and try to edit the database directly.  Thankfully it worked, because I'm not at all confident with my ability to 'fix' the issue with a database command.

I have my homepage set to the encrypted/secure version so that I can test it out.  Is anyone else using that version?  If so, please let me know if you see anything that needs to be fixed.

Unintended.  Fixed.

Explanation: I tried to uninstall the old modification, and install a new one.  The process failed.  I was lead to believe the button was still there.  At least the actual code still works, right? I just fixed it.  Thank you for the heads up.
