Need information on nuclear tech-chemistry
« on: Feb 05, 2015, 10:13 »
Hi, I am looking to apply to Excelon @ TMI as a nuke chem tech. I have not worked in the nuke industry and would like to know the type chemistry lab work I should expect. I have over a year of experience as a chemist and over a year of experience in QA (in analytical chem) in the pharm industry. I am almost 3 years out of college with a biology degree and a certificate in nanotech. If anyone could drop some advice as to how to cater my resume to fit this position it would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone who has worked/is working @ TMI as a nuke tech could share their experience, then that would help me tremendously.

Thanks in advance.

At Exelon, your day will consist of sampling various systems first thing in the morning and analyzing said samples the rest of the day.  You will be using HPLC (ion) to analyze reactor water, closed cooling water, radwaste and other various systems.  Weekly we use an AA for feedwater metal concentrations.  On the count room side you will be analyzing effluent air filters/samples to determine releases to the public, determining the radioactivity of samples, and sometimes counting an odd piece that will not pass a small article monitor.  For the non-radiological lab you will probably be sampling and analyzing boiler water and condensate, river in/out, sewage plant, waste water treatment plant and operating hypochlorite injection systems. Good luck.
