Not seeing what the position offers give me zero incentive to follow-up.

But then, you'd have to standardize your pay if you did that.  (Maybe it is time to do so?)

Utilities don't do it so why should vendors?

They usually post hourly and per diem only when it is exceptional and the need is great and immediate.  We all remember one time a site the offered a $5000 bonus.  There are actually enough workers if all the outages didn't step on each other, and some sites intentionally do not care if they are fully staffed to lower labor costs even if it overworks the remaining workers.  They are in control and don't see a need to list wages to attract workers; the fact there is a position open is enough to get all the workers they want.  Welcome to the dystopian world for nuke workers.

It is similar to what went on with gas prices.  Until they were mandated to post them on signs visible from the street, you had to drive up to the pump to compare.  Look at all the gas wasted searching.

In a similar manner, vendors usually will tell you if you call, but it is awkward to ask the pay rate then hang up if it is too low.  Then you have to form a personal matrix of the wages verses the cost of the local area.  They want to make it hard so you just take the first one that accepts you.

That has worked for me.  I've told them to call me when the price was $$, and they have.

You are old.  The price of gas hasn't been below 80 cents since before 1979.

http://www.randomuseless.info/gasprice/gasprice.html

From 1979 to 2002 the price was steady around a dollar.

It went from 1.20 in 2002 to 4.80 in 2009. Thanks Obama George W.

I remember gas at 29 cents a gallon back in 1971 when I was in high school.  I am old; I used a slide rule and saw color TV when it was introduced.  I remember the day Kennedy was shot.

I can understand not posting pay ranges but why can't they give the locations. I've seen things like "Northeast US" just plain "US" and "attractive area" in some vague geographic area.

I'm not sure about that. '86 looks lower than $.80 to me.

To help bring this thread back on topic.

If you are on the road it is important to keep in contact and in the memory of the recruiters calling to get info. Even if you are only marginally interested it would seem to be a good idea. Posting money up front can be a sign that the job is hard to fill and money may be the only attractive aspect of the job. It may be nice to have the info at your fingertips but in my opinion not a major factor.

They are not trying to hide the location from you, they are trying to hide it from their competitors. It's a cutthroat business and no one wants to give away any more then they have to.

I would expect this plays a part in leaving the wage and per diem amounts off as well.

Half empty, half full... any good engineer will tell you the glass is too big.
