Robert P. Gomez
Robert P. Gomez of Livermore died Friday, Jan. 21. He was 58.
Gomez was born in Livermore, Ca in 1946. He spent four years in the Navy following his graduation from Livermore High School. Prior to coming to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), he worked at GE Vallecitos in Sunol, Ca.
At LLNL, Gomez worked for Hazards Control Department for about two years then transferred to Chemistry and Material Science Department (C&MS) where he spent about 22 years as a plutonium technologist. He spent much of his career in C&MS supporting the plutonium casting and metallography facilities and made significant contributions to a number of the programs in the Superblock. In 2001, he moved to Nevada on a change of assignment and provided valuable support to the installation of the glovebox at the Device Assembly Facility. He retired from LLNL in June 2004.
Outside of work at LLNL he was a dedicated softball coach. He started coaching the San Jose Striker Women's 16 and under, 18 and under, and 18 Gold Traveling Softball in the early1980s and in the 1990s he also worked part time as a pitching coach for Women's Fast Pitch at US Berkeley.
He was noted for always having the girls' best interest at heart and taking great pride in their success. Gomez helped them in the short term as athletes and in the long term by helping many obtain college scholarships. He continued coaching softball until he moved to Nevada in 2001.
He is survived by his children Tammy Gomez, Robert Gomez, and Dominic Gomez of Livermore; his sister Marie Moreno of Mexico; his brother Michael Gomez of Utah; and one grandchild.
