Lessons Learned: Shipping

The purpose of this forum is to document on-the-job work experiences. Submit your best solutions for various jobs and processes. This is not to be plant specific, rumor, slander or urban legend. Postings will be reviewed, verified, edited for content, and archived for future reference. Post a summary for review if you wish to post a thesis or position paper. We are getting fewer and fewer, but before the knowledge is lost forever and plant / sites reinvent the wheel; we need to document what we have learned.

Lesson learned by personnel experience:  never survey a box for shipment that has not been opened at your facility.  Know the contents of the box. The box in question was surveyed by two senior technicians for shipment.  When the box in question was received at next facility, dose rates were found to be higher than surveyed at the shipping facility.  Reason: snow/ice blew into the box over the winter. By the time it got to the receiving facility, the ice had melted and 2 places on the outside of the box were higher than surveyed.  It went from 0.3 mrem/hr (Limited Quantity) to 1.0 mrem/hr (LSA).  Not good.  So before you survey a package, know the contents and it will save everyone a lot of grief.
