I think you thought is worthy of thinking about.
I'd probably consider giving the screen on the face detectors a wipe once in a while - especially if a container was provided at the portal.

Annual flu's are still more deadly than the corona virus (COVID-19) should be sanitizing anyway.

May be more corona virus deaths World wide but you are still far more likely to die of Flu in the US.

The flu has already killed 10,000 across US as world frets over coronavirus

Pray for warmer weather, assuming that it has the same vulnerability as the flu to the weather. You are still more likely to die of flu than the corono virus but the fix does not seem any different than the recommendations for flu season other than the vaccination has not been developed. This is likely to be a cyclic event like the flu as well.

Maybe but I suspect the opposite is true as many who have it barely notice. Those on the cruise ships look pretty healthy and most of the those who have died for the most part have other medical issues or advanced in age. Sounds a lot like flu though they are finding that transmission is easier with Corono virus.

How Does the New Coronavirus Compare with the Flu?

The flu has already caused about 10,000 deaths this season in the U.S. alone

"In general, the CDC recommends the following to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, which include both coronaviruses and flu viruses: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands; avoid close contact with people who are sick; stay home when you are sick; and clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces."

Not as much as this and the question about testing in China which was in doubt previously. Still not a major reason to worry as most people who get the virus will only endure what is similar to a bad cold. Some tested positive have not even exhibited symptoms. But then if there are unknown cases that makes the mortality rate even lower.

Some corono virus test kits shipped around US are flawed, CDC claims

https://nypost.com/2020/02/13/some-coronavirus-test-kits-shipped-around-us-are-flawed-cdc-claims/

The only difference I see in flu and corono virus is that there is no vaccination and probably won't be until next year. One death compared to 8000 here in the US and declining new cases in China with improved testing kits make much of the publicity on this virus very over hyped.

With 8,000-Plus Deaths in U.S. Alone, Flu Far More Deadly Than Coronavirus

https://weather.com/health/cold-flu/news/2020-01-28-flu-more-deadly-than-coronavirus

Getting back to the original post taking the flu seriously would also mitigate the Corono virus, as the recommendations to curb it's spread is the same as Flu. Since Flu is essentially not a big problem for most working age people other than a few days lost work it's spread is not taken that seriously. Now that we have the a corono virus (2019-nCoV) that adds to the mix of vaccinations we will be taking in the future. Corono viruses are not new and like flu's mutations causes the need to vary the vaccines for the next year. This took us by surprise because it was animal to human like the Ebola virus so there were no statistics to predict it. China is looking at it's open live animal markets where if it flies, swims, or crawls it is on the menu. One City is moving to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat.

"common flu" kills more because of infection rates,...

this corona is a 2% mortality rate,...

swine flu was about .05%, SARS was about 9%, ebola was 90%,...

so between reverse quarantines and quarantines the focus is to keep containment,...

the mortality rate is what concerns health pros, plus the long incubation period where the host is contagious to others without outward symptoms,...

so,......wash your hands:

https://nypost.com/2020/03/09/coronavirus-in-ny-cuomo-unveils-states-hand-sanitizer-made-by-prisoners/

so now they have evolved from having black men pick cotton for white cotton kings to having black men make hand sanitizer for white soccer moms,...

I'll bet they didn't see that coming when they started this whole virus thing,...

The worm turns.

Wuhan soccer team leaving Spain to escape virus

MADRID, March 12 (Reuters) - Wuhan Zall, the soccer team from the epicentre of the coronavirus, are to leave their training camp in the south of Spain to return to China, with their coach saying they are more at risk in Europe than in their home city.
“The problem right now is here, in China it has been practically eradicated,” Wuhan Zall coach Jose Gonzalez told Spain’s Efe news agency on Thursday.

Yes.  SloGlo posts in 'pittsburghese'. Has since Jan 11, 2004. It's a decision he made partially for comedic relieve and partially to preserve his anonymity 'back in the good ole days' when the forum was hopping.  I find it too painful to read, and typically just ignore it.

Here is a translator if you care enough to do so: http://www.pittsburghese.com/translator.shtml

A site I am 'familiar with', has begun a "pre-sequester" process.
Non-essential folks working from home. Essential folks only on site, who must complete a health screening (self-evaluation questionnaire & temperature).

'If' things get worse, then they would begin the sequester.

Not to start a political discussion that is for PolySci but I have heard this from more than one source. There must be unintended consequences to how the virus is being handled and misery from other factors of suppression of our economic system. Primarily right now most agree is "flatten" the virus curve and make the financial curve a "V" meaning a rapid recovery after a little more pain.

So what are you pitching for:  the V- quicker cycle, death rates like Italy/Spain or the slow drag out bell cure, but less dead because a couple of ventilators might free up for next chosen patient?
Personally, I think it's already everywhere.  No testing and lots of healthy asymptomatic cases; our fate is likely already set.  You just hope the critical age/immune compromised men are REALLY REALLY taking it serious.
You live in the tobacco belt.  Smoking males over 60 have their hands full.

Not pitching anything this is the reality of what government has to decide. At what point do we kill more people from unintended consequences than the virus. Poverty, depression, and crime rate have a lethality rate too among other unknowns. Living in a prosperous country lenthens you life span, desperation increases crime rate, and depression increases suicide rate. "The knowns, the known unknowns, and unknown unknowns".

From one perspective that would be a good thing as those who have had it would be far less likely to get it again reducing the rate of spread. Provided the current conventional wisdom is correct, and recurrences so far are from testing errors or relapse of original infection.

Since we're late to the party on becoming a pandemic and have the luxury of hindsight, are you hearing of "unintended consequences of the virus (Poverty, depression, and crime rate have a lethality rate too, among other unknowns) ?   China, Iran, Italy SK and Japan: are they showing those issues?   Maybe.  Maybe just not hearing about it.  I can't answer that.

I love crushing that reinfection discussion.  The Canadians did a nice investigative report on that claim and dismissed it.  Sick people who are almost healthy, over do it and relapse.  never over it.

I have been pondering a Machiavellian poser. With the COVID 19 pandemic social distancing and emphasis on hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus have we significantly reduced the normal mortality of the seasonal Flu. The precautions to combat the seasonal flu are the same as those for COVID 19. 12,000 to 61,000 annually over the the last ten years have died from Flu in the USA. WHO estimates that 290,000 to 650,000 die each year from the Flu.
Not making a comparison between the viruses just the overall effect on us because of the reaction to the new pandemic. I did a search and there is nothing I could find online.

this gist came inn my inn box.  eye got permission two post it hear.

Hey there
I'm a reporter for Bloomberg -- I cover the nuclear industry and i'm looking into the spring outages. Seems like utilities are in a tough spot. Can't really reschedule refueling, but having several hundred workers move from town to town this year seems like it could be an issue.
Have you heard anything about some of the measures utilities are taking to address this? And of them changing their plans?
Feel free to contact me, or pass this info to other folks if you know someone who's been affected.

Thanks much
Will Wade

it depends on where the cameras are, or are not,....

there's the "put clean skins on over the rubbers, then reach under the hood, grab the top of the coveralls and wipe the face with the upper inside portion of the coveralls",...

really, really way off any expectations,.....

and yet, it seems to work without any cross contaminations?!??!??

Well not me and not an outage but for BossLady at an NNSA site they are going to stagger shifts a bit to reduce traffic at the gates and they are spacing the lines coming and going to six foot. Internally they are practicing spacing as well and have reduced the number and size of meetings.

Y-12 does it's staff augmentation much different than a power plant and has a larger more diverse infrastructure footprint. They have a percentage of RP and other contractors for normal OPs to levelize manpower and keep a core of house personnel. Projects, and there are a lot of them, are staffed by the subcontractor but are treated the same as site staff from an access work standpoint. I suspect even with those differences the steps they are taking would apply to a power plant as well. I suspect each power plant would not handle it the same so I would simply ask your contractor who I am sure has that info from the utility. But the fundamental social/physical distancing would apply.

"A higher rate of transmission than expected means that more people have the virus than previously expected; when the number of those with coronavirus is divided by the number of deaths, therefore, the mortality rate for the disease drops." "If her model is accurate, fewer than one in a thousand who’ve been infected with COVID-19 become sick enough to need hospitalization, leaving the vast majority with mild cases or free of symptoms."
All makes sense. Being 20x more contagious than the seasonal flu is holding accurate. Only the very sick getting testing (outside of NY) is defeating the tracking.  Millionaires (politicians, athletes and celebs) who can get the tests showing positive asymptomatic is proof.  The virus is likely everywhere and the lockdowns is stunting the magnitude.  Death rates are linear (no threshold!)   In 2021 they'll look at the small spike in the plotted numbers and that will be COVID-linked, regardless of the the cause reports.

The bottom line (IMO) is this is a Beta test for the current Politicians to see how much control they really have over their citizens...  The press does what they do best, sensationalize the news to help said politicians... (why is "Dirty Laundry" echoing in my head)…  Now if they can just disarm the citizens....  as it is now, you may need "papers" to travel...  all this sound familiar?  Germany in the 1930's?  USSR and it's satellite's in the 70's?  Your papers are not in order....  Already the result is that more citizens are getting addicted to Govt handouts...

John Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton, 13th Marquess of Groppoli, (10 January 1834 – 19 June 1902), was an English Catholic historian, politician, and writer.

He is perhaps best known for the remark, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men...", which he made in a letter to an Anglican bishop

Herd immunity came into play when the discussion about whether or not immunization should be mandatory with no exceptions or to include exceptions due to religious or other objections in small communities (misinformed anti-vaxers).

Caught Between Herd Immunity And National Lockdown, Holland Hit Hard By Covid-19

https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2020/03/27/caught-between-herd-immunity-and-national-lockdown-holland-hit-hard-by-covid-19/#27af598e3557

At one presser a reporter asked if there was an acceptable death rate (a gothcha question) the response was none. Of course the real issue is to reduce the total number of deaths. Not a new concept we experience that in the safety culture nuke or most other industries. The goal is no injury or death but at the same time we track the the inevitable injury/death rate to suppress the total. It is nice to see the CDC speak about it even if they do not call it that. Governor Cuomo hinted in one of his pressers that maybe he should have done things a little different I can't find that statement but my take was he was talking about the herd immunity affect.

Not pitching anything this is the reality of what government has to decide. At what point do we kill more people from unintended consequences than the virus. Poverty, depression, and crime rate have a lethality rate too among other unknowns. Living in a prosperous country lengthens you life span, desperation increases crime rate, and depression increases suicide rate. "The knowns, the known unknowns, and unknown unknowns".

Still not pitching anything it is just something to think about and apparently I am not the only one. I don't know the answer and I am just glad I don't have to make such decisions.

Not sure why my original reply was modified, but it was referencing the government of Japan's decision to unnecessarily evacuate the areas around Fukushima. That "unintended consequence" killed many more people than the damaged reactors possibly could have.

Very true and maybe the initial response to the corona virus has some of the same misinformed/biased bases on the decision process. I think it is much more complicated though as this is a steep learning curve for most of those in office or in the medical profession.

"oar any profession. must bee why we haven't herd from n.p.p. re outage preps , precautions,  practices two bee inn affect."
The information concerning outages can have a potential financial impact on the host company. This is why it always has been, and I'm sure more so now than ever, been considered proprietary information. Plant staff was always discouraged from putting out particulars to the local media when they call the RP desk or other strategical spots within, and especially posting stuff on social media. Think about the potential impact on the utility if word got out that the outage and subsequent restart will be delayed a few months due to Captain Covids wrath on the workforce. I'm sure that the facilities are putting out strict guidance on worker bees providing their 2 centavos to the nice lady from the local news, and especially posting on social media. The ant eye fission types would love to get their hooks into a breaking story that the nuclear industry will get wiped out by Captain Covid with this prediction based on a collage of outage updates provided by local workers. Stay the course - Captain Covid be damned.

Just a casual observation, noticing people outside of Npp's wiping surfaces do not practice 'good' decon methods and not practicing good cross contamination methods. Maybe a large contractor company guy. Hint(Eric B.) could coordinate some decon supervisors and utility company communication departments.  A possible joint venture for public service announcement videos for broadcast, a video from experts in the field. As much as health care professional try, a video reminder would help. The cost would be minimal compared to the cost of quarenteed individuals. Probably the only other issue would be the utilities desire to remain invisible. Just a thought.

It did not take to long nice to see.

FDA Authorizes Use of Malaria Drugs for Coronavirus

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/fda-emergency-authorizes-malaria-drugs-for-coronavirus/?fbclid=IwAR0WB5ZeI7VfUHoqIFYl_9KBeZpkOK_7yHPrOpeAH-5NxI3xGUfMgaSGLgo

What I don't understand is that we had a drug that had a long history of use and very few negative side effects and they still waited for 'proof' that it was effective before they let people try it to cure a different disease that people were dying from. Lots of people died that could have lived if they just said 'What the hell, lets try it... what is the worst that could happen?'

This should have been used immediately.

really?!?!?

think about this, a COVID virus is smaller than an asbestos fiber,...

OSHA would never let you use the vaunted N95 mask as an approved respirator for asbestos work,...

we all jump through hoops to allow their use as a nuisance filter,...

all these masks, and gloves, and all else are visual band aids to make people "feel" better,...

their efficacy is nil,...

you do know that if you're in WalMart wearing an N95 mask and you can smell the lavendar scented powder emanating off the body of the 345 pound sweat hog standing in line in front of you that you are sucking in all the COVID virus that her effusive sweat glands are wafting into the atmosphere?!?!?!?

allowing untrained, unaware, inept "civilians" to utilize PPE to minimize virus cross-contamination is an exercise in "remain calm, all is well" smoke and mirrors BS,...

with the fear logic sneaking in on these boards we may as well just throw a bunch of PPE at a bunch of ditch diggers and then let 'em rip on that seal table!!!!!

what could go wrong?!?!?

been there, dun that,... the doormat to hell does not read "welcome", the doormat to hell reads "it's just business"

Of course our security already said absolutely no masks inside the protected area. They need to perform face to face identification. You know security, always willing to help out with any realistic issue. I said I don't remember security having an issue with workers wearing SCBAs for fire brigade, PAPRs or full face respirators......who's to say that's not a terrorist down in the cavity detensioning the reactor head?

I am hearing mixed information about wearing a mask. Fouci says it is not needed provided you are keeping that six foot distance and you do not have the virus but that seems to be changing a bit. Also hear that mask if worn may be worse than not wearing if you fiddle with it as the primary mechanism for transfer is contact/touching. Not saying it is not transferred by aerosol droplets just that it is secondary. Guidance seems to be wear it if you want but be careful.

Even if wearing a mask would offer total protection, its obvious Nuclear Security and their perceived risk of bad guys in the protected area is much more important than personal health.

protection factor?!?!?!?!?

I would bet a biscuit and gravy breakfast that it's less than 10 for airborne virus,...

I would bet that the constant contact / touching is 10X worse than not wearing one and just not touching hands to face,...

effective PF - 0,....

these are not fit tested for the average joe on the street,....

they're not just one time use, they're one time touch to apply, and then only touch one more time to remove and discard,...

these masks are a psychological band aid for the masses,...

limerick n.p.p. terror

https://www.pottsmerc.com/news/workers-terrified-at-limerick-nuclear-plant-amid-coronavirus/article_934efb34-76a4-11ea-afbe-17495d88f209.html

I saw that article late last night, and nearly everything I read aligned with people I’ve been talking to since they arrived on site. Some contractors have simply left citing health concerns. Social distancing during an outage is a difficult thing to do. Compounding it is the fact this outage is taking place in the county with the second highest number of COVID-19 cases in the state. I expect more positives, and I expect more statements from the company about how much they’re doing to combat it. Funny that you asked about in-processing procedures and social distancing during training, and this contractor spoke on those specifically.

OK - I cant take anymore Pennsyltucky fear mongering bs. You are truly gonna associate the terror word with whats going on at an outage ? You and your Neandrathal communication approach need to head to an abandonded steel mill or abandoned Turnpike tunnel and take a chill pill or three. Steelers suck except for Kevin Greene.

Of course!!

Very few workers at the plant right now because they "scrubbed" the work schedule. HRA/LHRA briefs are held in a fairly large room and workers can keep their distance quite easily. Thankfully we are 1 of 2 plants (so I've read) who do not have an outage this year.

I've been watching this thread for awhile, but wasn't at an outage which had addressed the problem. However, I just started one which has. Here are the published RP points to address the COVID19 and the outage.  I am paraphrasing here as it was put out on paper, today is the first 12 hour shift, and I'm lazy.

RP Social Distance Plan points

Shift briefs in break areas

Job briefs via conference calls

Break trailers expanded by 150%

Sanitation strategy
1) 3 workers to wipe RCA exit PCMs
2) workers and RP wipe CP PCMs
3) workers collect/sanitize EADs prior to each use/reuse
4) EAD log in readers moved to area when they are spread out 6' apart
5) normal access doors to RCA control point access/egress areas are removed or blocked open to allow passage without hand touch
6) table top hand sanitizers around RCA CP
7) 6' tape marks on ground for workers waiting to monitor
8)Containment brief area to allow only 4 workers, RPTs will use laser printers for map reference
9) workers will sanitize rad meters when returned and after source check
10) additional turbine bld restrooms opened
11) supervisors will be minimized in common office
12) vendors being utilized for shop augmentation if infections become prevalent
13) Microsoft meetings to be used

I have been researching Zoom for use with family and other meetings. If you do not use a lot of the bells and whistles nor record the session (to the cloud) the privacy is not that much of an issue. One of the big problems is "Zoom-Bombing" where your meeting/session is invaded by trolls. Don't broadcast the meeting link to anyone except the participants if you are scheduling in advance. "Zoom-bombing" is mostly a problem with public meetings. Simply starting one and inviting after the start is the best if for family not easy to do if it is an organizational meeting. I have participated in one meeting for SubVets and a few with family it gets harder to manage as the number of people increases.

Enhance your calm. Be Well.  8)

These are all over the place and though not faux news they are not the full story. That is why I said don't use the bells and whistles and do not record as you may put it in the cloud where the security issues occur. Many public and Federal agencies have banned the use of Zoom for individuals but it is available through the agency itself so it can control the settings in particular the file, recording and sharing functions. You may even see that Zoom is a Chinese government owned company but that is Faux News it's majority owner is US citizen and it is traded on NASDAQ.

yeah I remember someone on this site a year or 2 ago disagreed with my story just because it came from yahoo...and I agree yahoo has a very liberal slant, but the article actually agreed with most of the things this person was saying they just say "yahoo" and saw red.

I think fox news is biased, but not as bad as many other sources.  It's funny when people call it faux news and you ask them what their sources are..they usually realize what you are saying right away and tone it down.  Nowadays news stations love to get political since it garners them viewers and clicks. choosing what to report on and what facts to add or leave out seems commonplace lately without a care to how biased that can leave a story (framing).  alot of places people consider news are mostly opinion piece generators.  it is funny and sad when they don't realize this and never will.

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/  pretty good website that tells you most sites are at least slightly biased, which way they are biased and WHY they are biased.  word choice is a common reason.  for instance if I was for a cause I would call the fighters rebels, if I was in the middle maybe insurgents, on the other side how about renegade or terrorist?  just an example.  word choice can be very important to how a story is perceived.

before I believe ANY news story that is even slightly out of the realm of possibility on any website I will google it and 90% of the time the story left something very important out depending on how they want the story to be perceived.

Who fact checks the fact checkers and where is the median for right- left. I personally see Fox News (not commentary) as much more reliable than other networks. But then the commentary although ridiculed about current views seems to be frequently vindicated by time. Russia MSM coverage a case in point. Kavanaugh hearings are another example especially when you look at the current coverage of Biden's sexual assault charge. Truth and facts are stubborn things and it is easy to be truthful and factual in a narrow view without regard to the larger more rational view.

To bring this back to OP on Corona virus it looks like we may be on the mend but not out of the woods. Back to work plans on a Federal and State level (maybe not Michigan) look like they will be starting soon. Here in Tennessee Governor Lee and Knox county Mayor Glenn Jacobs (Kane in WWE) have announced back to work plans.

Knox County Mayor: Recent suicide rate ‘shocking’

“That number is completely shocking and makes me wonder if what we are doing now is really the best approach,” Jacobs said. “We have to determine how we can respond to COVID-19 in a way that keeps our economy intact, keeps people employed and empowers them with a feeling of hope and optimism – not desperation and despair.”

I believe Fox News is pretty reliable.  And this may not be specifically related to the virus, but this is a hot button issue right now so media bias is very much in play right now with the virus.

This one tracks the RNA of the virus as it mutates, over time and location, showing its migration and family origins.

Not only temperature takers but post common usage cleaners. At the BV2 outage, there are at least 3 workers cleaning EAD terminals, EADs, and portal monitors after every touch usage, 24/7 at the RCA. Inside the BRB, the phone and page handsets are cleansed at least hourly.

yep, this is the alternate reality we find ourselves in,....

I can foresee a day when certain Americans will be registered as "essential workers/people" with the prerequisite ID (aka traveling papers),...

it'll take a few small changes at the top and maybe another pandemic (which seems to have a changing definition year to year),...

it'll be a good time to be a nukeworker,....

as for the the rest?!?!?

Re: coronavirus

this outage is virtually over, Mode 3 to be achieved at the time of this writing.
The COVID19 tabulation is:
1 confirmed case, under treatment, a utility employee.

Did the steps taken as reported help this achievement?
I think so. Not only was the COVID19 not a factor, very few illness, not even Outage Crud, were noticed by the working population.

How'd your outage go?

Not sure what that has to do with an increase in suicides during the pandemic, one of the predicted outcomes of closing the economy.

Polarization.  Please stop with the opinion pieces.

Probably should have just looked for the video and not posted the article. I posted for the humor mainly.

All things considered, it would be almost impossible for me to believe that an operational nuclear plant would head into an outage, under the current siege, with no plan in place to: protect the health and safety of the public, protect the health and safety of the workforce, safely perform required refueling and maintenance activities, and safely restart the plant. All in as efficient a manner as reasonably achievable. Its what they do.

Uh yeah, maybe share wasn't the proper word to use. Maybe they would like to enlighten us with their outage experience.

SPRING 2020 BV U2  1 confirmed case
SORING 2021 BV U1.  147 unconfirmed cases
A REM is a REM is a REM
Yea, though I walk through the boundaries of containment, I shall fear no dose, for my meters are with me.  My counters, air sample filters, and smears, they comfort me.
