" some of the fungi growing in the area around the site of 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident had the ability of growing into and decomposing so called “hot particles” – pieces of graphite from destroyed reactor # 4 ..."    This is misleading.

The fungi is not magically speeding up decay.  Changing the carbon into some other compound.  ok
I'm not even sure if the probably meager attenuation is worth growing it.

Maybe if they had said eats radioactive material the article would be more palatable (pun intended). Phytoremediation is not new in the nuclear field and is used around the world to clean up contaminated sites of radioactive material and other hazardous materials. Not sure if this fungi has any use other than keeping researchers employed and pure science.

Radioactive material, after eating, emits radiation. Therefore the fungi eat radiation preemptively.

  • I knew I got into IT for a reason!
I fail to see how that resembles a remedy to any situation. All you have now is radioactive fungi instead of radioactive fungi food.
