Outage Work as RP
« on: Nov 06, 2020, 01:27 »
Greetings

I am a degreed Nuclear Engineer/Health Physicist with four years experience working at a power plant (risk management), and 7 1/2 years at my current employer (oil/gas services) where I am the Radiation Safety Officer.

I am looking at the possibility of transitioning out of o/g and doing plant outage work as an RP. What are minimum qualifications/certifications/etc. required for such a role.

Thanks!

If you escape without a did ya do a thread search on the subject flogging from the site swamp, consider your self lucky. There is in fact a metric butt load of information on RP qualifications on the site. Quick and dirty version is you would be better off in pursuit of an Engineer/Health Physicist position than an RPT. Your mean free path to being an RP is gonna be at least in the 2 year range given credit for your education and RSO experience. That would also include the at times difficulty of getting started at the low end (junior) which is pretty much based on experience. The 4 years in risk management is Butkus in RPville. RSO at a fossil facility sounds like a decent gig, but if its time to go then your degree and Health Physicist stature should get you farther in a shorter period of time than getting started as a job coverage technician. Good luck!

you're overqualified and under experienced to be a useful RP tech at a contemporary commercial NPP outage,...

better you try to go "house" at a commercial NPP not facing imminent closure within the next 10 to 20 years,...

or find a government gig or an associated university gig, where your degree opens more doors into the bureaucracy,...

you're asking and I'm just telling ya,...

actually those floggings have more to do with the notion that persons who do not perform their own research before asking broad based and leading questions tend to take up much more time of the other persons who have to manage those first persons on a daily work basis,...

some folks like to answer nub questions all day,...

those persons are good training instructors,...

management/supervisory types are not training types,...

Honestly almost none of that matters.  If you want to work an outage call Eric Bartlett and have a convo with him.  Bartlett has 80% of the contracts....so they pretty much will listen to your pitch because you have a background in RP/nuclear and place you where they can in an outage.  They will tell you what you need to do.  Don't be surprised if you have to do some JR time the amount depending on how quickly your RSO experience translates to SR RP tech.  We had a rad engineer show up to North Anna about 15 years ago who had never been a SR Tech....of course North Anna was desperate for techs...he had the experience on paper so walla!  He got 2 straight up dose alarms on the same day.  A record.

Send me your resume and I'll get with my Technical Specialist to see what we can count vs. commercial time and let you know where you stand.

Thanks

management/supervisory types are not training types,.
As well as, typically speaking, solid field operations technicians are not management/supervisory types.

D&Z also places professional level as well as techs for outage and augmentation work.
