It's bit ironic that in September during the Secret City Festival my submarine veterans chapter will use this bell to acknowledge the loss of submarines and submariners most of whom perished in the in WWII primarily in the Pacific. This will be the 15th year we have done this and I had to ask the WWII veterans who were members of our base (five at the time) if they were OK with it.
I met one of the surviving Marines who guarded the bomb on the USS Indianapolis. He had maintained a friendship with the granddaughter of the Japanese submarine commander who sank the Indianapolis until his death recently. Her grandfather came to America after the war to testify in support of the Indianapolis captain that the Pentagon was trying to crucify.
Sorry about waxing philosophic but when in the middle of a festival every year that celebrates our effort to create the bomb is a Peace Bell from the Japanese people. Near by is Y-12 that will be cleaning up hazardous waste for years to come from the Manhattan Project.
