Phone call to Ludlum HQ in USA and asked them.  Their HP tech rep said the R stood for Roentgen.  Case closed.

Dang this could have gone on for a lot longer. Who was that tech rep a salesman? Maybe he has a bias for historical nomenclature. I want a recount there may have been a hanging chad.

another silly question if the meter face for R/hr and Sv/Hr match up how is roentgen at .877 match up with the Sv/hr meter face? Just sayin'

MicroR (Model 19)  are used for finding radioactive material (Roentgen), usually outside RCA's (very sensitive, over response)

MicroREM (Bicron) are used for setting dose rates (Roentgen Equivalent Man)

Believe me, from experience, when they NRC sees that you have been using a MicroR for ISFSI and Protected Area boundary dose rates.....for many years, they will not be happy.

both meters (bicron and ludlum) use NaI (I recall once upon a time Bicron [not thermo fisher] advertised the detectors as organic),....


bicrons can be "doped" for low energy sensitivity or "undoped" for standard sensitivity,...


either instrument when "normalized" to a Cs-137 field will improperly respond in oh, I don't know, something like an Am-241 field (actually I do know),...


so, sieverts and rem are the same result on different scales, energy deposited, damage done, soft tissue,...


roentgens are not the same, roentgens are energy deposited into thin air, air don't get hurt, air don't get sick, air don't die,...


the detectors inside the little black or tan box and the electronics inside the little black or tan box don't care what symbols are painted or printed on the meter face,...


it's how you set your meters up,...


"R" is just an "R",....


it's just a symbol on a meter face, etc.,...


it can mean just about anything you want it to, IF you know what you want it to mean, and you know how to set it up to mean that,....


if all of the above leaves you in that "the world is flat and a rock is a rock" place,...


well then, you're not qualified to know what you don't know,...


BUT, you do know how to observe a needle on a meter face or note a digital figure on a display screen,....


and write down a number on a piece of paper or type an entry onto a computer screen,...


and that obviously has some value, since you're all getting paychecks to do just that,...

I doubt it Roentgen is a historical term as well as a more precise term for calibration. NIST does not want any association of Roentgen with Sieverts. Historical terms in RadCon are not that unusual, Thoron and Radon are a good example both are radon but the top of the decay chain, are uranium and thorium but Thoron to describe the gas at the end of the decay chain is not used that much any more.


 

I have to admit to trolling a bit but it sure helped kept this thread alive for a bit.
