What I've Been Tinkering With Lately

Hey everyone,

It has been a busy few weeks down in the NukeWorker engine room, so I figured I would pop my head up, wipe the grease off my hands, and tell you what has been going on. Grab your coffee (or your dosimeter, whatever you carry to work).

The Photo Gallery Got HUGE
We just added 1,492 photos of nuclear plants to the gallery. Yes, 1,492, which means the gallery now technically predates Columbus by a year. They come from public sources like Wikimedia, the NRC, and even some aerial farm-survey flyovers. So if you have ever wanted to stare at cooling towers you do not have to commute to, today is your lucky day. The plant facility pages and the map popups pull these in too, so the whole site looks a lot less like it is stuck in 2004.

The Homepage Got a Facelift
The front page now behaves more like a news feed, with cards for the hottest job clusters and the liveliest forum threads, pictures and all. The idea was simple: you should be able to land on the site and see what is actually happening without three clicks and a prayer.

Quizzes Now Hand Out Certificates
Pass one of the quizzes and you can now print yourself a spiffy certificate. It will not get you through the gate at a plant (sorry, nice try), but it looks great on the fridge and proves to your spouse that those hours online were educational.

Behind the Scenes, AKA The Boring Heroics
Not everything is glamorous. A lot of the recent work was the digital equivalent of fixing leaky valves:

• Fought off a small army of spam bots and scrapers trying to crash the party. The bouncer is a lot bigger now.
• Upgraded the ad system so pages load faster instead of hanging on you.
• Wrestled the email system into submission so job alerts actually go out reliably instead of choking.

None of that is exciting to read about, but trust me, you would have noticed if I had NOT done it.

I am putting the finishing touches on a way to search jobs by the actual plant you want to work at. Want to see everything open at one specific station? That is almost ready. More on that soon.
