Bulk Release Of Oil

Who has some good info on releasing drums of oil?
This site is governed under the Ohio Dept. Of Health and the NRC.
We have our own lab for analytical data, but have some questions.
Who's the Subject Matter Expert out there?

What kind of oil?  Do you have a TSD in mind?  What do you mean by release?

How many pci/liter or pci/gram can you have to constitute free release from a Restricted Area to a clean area for disposal?

This is a DOE/NRC/Ohio Dept. of Health regulated project.

The samples have been taken and analyzed by the laboratory. The Th-234 result was 2.85 E-1 pc/gram.

What do ya got?

Where did the Th come from? (NORM?) NORMS arent well regulated if that is the case.. if can go down the road. Was the Th added from regulated material? or was it from DU studies? Several questions must be asked prior to "free release!"

You must remember that waste oil will eventually be burned and the rad contaminates will be concentrated or dispersed durning the combustion process. If you are in a hurry, one method is that you might try to filter the oil through an "oil press" or high pressure system or wash it.

Other wise delay and decay. With such a short half-life it wouldn't take much to set up a holding program for the oil to be released in the near future.  Don't forget to check if that state is a "used oil' state with RCRA restrictions.  Depending on your lab turn around time you more than likely have a whole lot less than you started with.

Is that the only isotope that you have?

Were any others identified in old part 61 analysis?

Have fun Dave

If it only contains that thorium, let it delay and decay. then send it to a used oil place. should be lots of those near by.  Oh another question, is it fossil devived product and have you done a PCB, RCRA 8 metals and TOX content?
